With the score tied 63-63 and time running out in regulation, Welty dribbled left in traffic and knocked down a jumper at the buzzer from just inside the three-point line to lift the Tomcats to a 65-63 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over visiting Westminster. It was Thiel's third straight win.
Rob Clune was let go from Allegheny two years ago after posting seven seasons of double-digit wins. He's getting another chance, this time as a women's basketball coach at Thiel.
After a 2010-2011 campaign that saw Thiel's women's basketball team struggle to a 5-21 mark, the program looks to rebound in a big way in 2011-2012. There is a sense of optimism heading into the season, and much of that centers on the return of seniors Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) and Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison).
