Tomcats win PAC opener

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Jaclyn Watkins (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) came off the bench Wednesday to score 25 points and pull down 12 rebounds to lead the Tomcats to a 68-60 win over the Geneva Golden Tornadoes in their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
 
The double-double was the second of the season for Watkins, a sophomore forward. She made 12-of-17 shots from the floor Wednesday and also recorded two assists, a block and a steal.
 
Another sophomore forward, Hannah Stoneman (Sugarcreek, Ohio/Hiland) scored eight points with 11 rebounds.
 
Senior guard Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) also reached double digits in scoring with 12 points. She made four shots from the floor, including a trio of threes, to go along with seven boards and four assists.
 
The Tomcats, who never trailed in the PAC tilt, shot 51.9 percent (28-54) from the floor. They also made 30 percent (6-20) of their three-pointers and 75 percent of their foul shots (6-8).
 
Thiel won three key statistical battles in the game, including: points in the paint (34-16), points off the bench (35-14) and rebounds (54-22).
 
Leading by 11 point at halftime, Thiel's largest lead in the second half was a 19-point ledger after Stoneman scored on a layup with 12:32 remaining.
 
Heidi Mann paced Geneva with 24 points. Marissa Heaney (11) and Nicole Hyland (10) also reached double digits in scoring.
 
The Tomcats (2-4, 1-0 PAC) will return to action Saturday when they host the W&J Presidents at the Beeghly Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
