News Releases

March 8, 2025 12th-Ranked Captains Fall to 20th-Ranked Roanoke, 77-75, in Second Round NCAA Action Christopher Newport University's second half comeback fell just short Saturday night, as Roanoke College edged the Captains, 77-75, to advance in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament. Senior Joshua McClary's 17-footer with 4.4 seconds remaining proved to be the difference, as fifth-year senior Jahn Hines' last-second driving layup attempt missed the mark, sending the Maroons to the Sweet 16 to play Catholic University next Friday. Jahn Hines, a three-time All-American and three-time conference Player of the Year, saw his remarkable career come to a close after 123 games as a Captain. He recorded his second straight double-double by scoring 32 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. It marked his sixth double-double of the season, and the fifth time this year he posted 30 or more points for the Captains. Hines ends his career with 2,086 points, second only to Lamont Strothers' 2,709 points scored from 1987-1991.
March 7, 2025 12th-Ranked Christopher Newport Advances in NCAA Play With 101-75 Victory over John Jay Christopher Newport University recorded its highest point total of the season Friday night in a 101-75 victory over John Jay College at the Freeman Center. The victory in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament means the Captains will take on the Maroons of Roanoke College Saturday night in the second round, with tip off set for 6:30 p.m. Roanoke won over Pfeiffer University, 71-70, in the first game Friday at the Freeman Center. Sophomore Toa Hollenbeck posted a career-high 30 points, making seven-of-nine three point attempts, and fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines registered his fifth double-double of the year with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead CNU. The Captains are now 23-5, and will play a Roanoke squad that erased an 18-point second half deficit to pull out the victory over Pfeiffer and improve to 24-5.
March 1, 2025 Eighth-Ranked Captains Fall to Mary Washington, 71-66, in Coast-To-Coast Championship  Christopher Newport University was plagued by poor shooting Saturday night, and the eighth-ranked Captains fell to the University of Mary Washington, 71-66, in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship game. The Captains, the top seed in the four-team tourney, are now 22-5 and the defeat snapped a streak of three straight C2C tournament titles for John Krikorian's squad, as well as an eight-game winning streak. Mary Washington, now 13-14, receives the NCAA Division III Tournament automatic bid by virtue of the victory. With the five-point triumph, the Eagles snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Captains dating back to 2019, including two defeats this season.
February 28, 2025 Hines scores 2,000th career point as CNU advances Christopher Newport battled from behind for much of the afternoon Friday in the C2C tournament semifinal against UC Santa Cruz.
February 22, 2025 Tenth-Ranked Christopher Newport Concludes Regular Season With 72-58 Victory at Mary Washington Christopher Newport University won its seventh straight game Saturday, as the tenth-ranked Captains ended the regular season with a flourish. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines scored 32 points and pulled down eight rebounds as CNU defeated the University of Mary Washington, 72-58, at Ron Rosner Arena. The victory marked the 400th career win for Head Coach John Krikorian, as his squad completed the regular season with a 21-4 record. Jahn Hines scored 18 points in the first half, and added 14 more after intermission as he registered his fourth game over 30 points this season. He surged past Steve Artis into second place on CNU's all-time scoring list in the process, and has now scored 1,986 career points. Only Lamont Strothers, who scored 2709 career points from 1987-91, has scored more in the 57-year history over CNU men's basketball.
February 15, 2025 12th-Ranked Christopher Newport Downs Mary Washington, 71-55, as Jahn Hines Scores 22 Following Jersey Retirement Ceremony Christopher Newport University fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines didn't let the emotion of Senior Night affect his play Saturday night. Not even the retirement of his uniform number 22 prior to tip off got in the way of another sparkling performance from the Norfolk native, who led the 12th-ranked Captains to a 71-55 victory over the University of Mary Washington at the Freeman Center. Hines provided another night of incredible entertainment for Captains fans by scoring exactly 22 points as CNU improved to 20-4 on the season. To make it even more memorable, he added a career-high 18 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. His brother, junior Collin Hines, also got in the act by scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 boards for his own double-double, his fifth of the year, as the Captains wrapped up their home schedule with a Freeman Center mark of 12-1.
