Lynchburg, Va. -- Hornet fans...meet Cameron Savage.
University of Lynchburg junior Cameron Savage led the Hornets to an 83-66 win over Christopher Newport Sunday afternoon in Lynchburg's first home game of the year. He scored a career-high 20 points with four assists.
Tharon Suggs opened the game with a 3-pointer from the corner, giving the Hornets a lead the never relinquished.
Suggs' shot began an 18-4 run for the Hornets, lasting 6:07. Suggs added six points during the run while Savage and T.C. Thacker both contributed four points.
Halfway through the first period, Lynchburg led 22-8. The Hornets are outscoring opponents 74-20 during the first ten minutes of each game this season.
At halftime, the Hornets held a 15-point lead over the Captains. Christopher Newport shot 8-30 (26.7%) from the floor in the first half and only made one 3-point shot.
Thacker and Savage owned the opening five minutes of the second half. Thacker scored six points in the early-going out of halftime and Savage added five more, putting Lynchburg up 52-34 with 15:19 remaining.
Thacker ignited another scoring run for the Hornets, scoring 10-straight points. The graduate student from Madison Heights, Va. started his hot streak with a dunk, then added six free throws and a layup. During his scoring run, Thacker took a pass from Savage strong to the rim and finished the layup through contact. He converted the three-point play and put Lynchburg up by 20 with 7:58 to play. Justin Elkin helped keep Thacker's run alive by pinning a shot from the Captains against the glass for one of Lynchburg's four blocks.
With five minutes to go, Isräel Lockamy snagged an offensive rebound and put it back up for two. On the next possession, Trey Pittman set up Lockamy for a three. Pittman made two 3-pointers of his own during the game. As a team, the Hornets shot 42.1% (8-19) from deep and 28-61 (45.9%) from the floor.
Elijah Davis put the finishing touches on Lynchburg's big 83-66 win, sinking a layup with 14 seconds left and scoring his first-career points.
Savage, playing his first game in front of a Lynchburg crowd, ended with 20 points, four assists, and two rebounds. Thacker also scored 20 points, marking the first time Lynchburg featured two 20-point scorers since Feb. 28, 2020 when Thacker had 26 and Chance Greene '20 scored 24.
The Hornets also grabbed six steals and only turned the ball over nine times; the least amount of turnovers since Jan. 22, 2020 when they had seven.
Carrington Young and Trey Pittman both secured seven rebounds as Lynchburg won the battle on the boards.
Lynchburg is now 5-5 against Christopher Newport and will travel to Newport News, Va. on Dec. 12 for a rematch with the Captains.
The Hornets (2-1) will take on N.C. Wesleyan after Thanksgiving on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.
