12th-Ranked Captains Fall to 20th-Ranked Roanoke, 77-75, in Second Round NCAA Action
March 08, 2025Christopher Newport University's second half comeback fell just short Saturday night, as Roanoke College edged the Captains, 77-75, to advance in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament. Senior Joshua McClary's 17-footer with 4.4 seconds remaining proved to be the difference, as fifth-year senior Jahn Hines' last-second driving layup attempt missed the mark, sending the Maroons to the Sweet 16 to play Catholic University next Friday. Jahn Hines, a three-time All-American and three-time conference Player of the Year, saw his remarkable career come to a close after 123 games as a Captain. He recorded his second straight double-double by scoring 32 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. It marked his sixth double-double of the season, and the fifth time this year he posted 30 or more points for the Captains. Hines ends his career with 2,086 points, second only to Lamont Strothers' 2,709 points scored from 1987-1991. -
12th-Ranked Christopher Newport Advances in NCAA Play With 101-75 Victory over John Jay
March 07, 2025Christopher Newport University recorded its highest point total of the season Friday night in a 101-75 victory over John Jay College at the Freeman Center. The victory in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament means the Captains will take on the Maroons of Roanoke College Saturday night in the second round, with tip off set for 6:30 p.m. Roanoke won over Pfeiffer University, 71-70, in the first game Friday at the Freeman Center. Sophomore Toa Hollenbeck posted a career-high 30 points, making seven-of-nine three point attempts, and fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines registered his fifth double-double of the year with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead CNU. The Captains are now 23-5, and will play a Roanoke squad that erased an 18-point second half deficit to pull out the victory over Pfeiffer and improve to 24-5. -
Eighth-Ranked Captains Fall to Mary Washington, 71-66, in Coast-To-Coast Championship
March 01, 2025Christopher Newport University was plagued by poor shooting Saturday night, and the eighth-ranked Captains fell to the University of Mary Washington, 71-66, in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship game. The Captains, the top seed in the four-team tourney, are now 22-5 and the defeat snapped a streak of three straight C2C tournament titles for John Krikorian's squad, as well as an eight-game winning streak. Mary Washington, now 13-14, receives the NCAA Division III Tournament automatic bid by virtue of the victory. With the five-point triumph, the Eagles snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Captains dating back to 2019, including two defeats this season. -

Tenth-Ranked Christopher Newport Concludes Regular Season With 72-58 Victory at Mary Washington
February 22, 2025Christopher Newport University won its seventh straight game Saturday, as the tenth-ranked Captains ended the regular season with a flourish. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines scored 32 points and pulled down eight rebounds as CNU defeated the University of Mary Washington, 72-58, at Ron Rosner Arena. The victory marked the 400th career win for Head Coach John Krikorian, as his squad completed the regular season with a 21-4 record. Jahn Hines scored 18 points in the first half, and added 14 more after intermission as he registered his fourth game over 30 points this season. He surged past Steve Artis into second place on CNU's all-time scoring list in the process, and has now scored 1,986 career points. Only Lamont Strothers, who scored 2709 career points from 1987-91, has scored more in the 57-year history over CNU men's basketball. -
12th-Ranked Christopher Newport Downs Mary Washington, 71-55, as Jahn Hines Scores 22 Following Jersey Retirement Ceremony
February 15, 2025Christopher Newport University fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines didn't let the emotion of Senior Night affect his play Saturday night. Not even the retirement of his uniform number 22 prior to tip off got in the way of another sparkling performance from the Norfolk native, who led the 12th-ranked Captains to a 71-55 victory over the University of Mary Washington at the Freeman Center. Hines provided another night of incredible entertainment for Captains fans by scoring exactly 22 points as CNU improved to 20-4 on the season. To make it even more memorable, he added a career-high 18 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. His brother, junior Collin Hines, also got in the act by scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 boards for his own double-double, his fifth of the year, as the Captains wrapped up their home schedule with a Freeman Center mark of 12-1. -
12th-Ranked Captains Come From Behind to Beat Salisbury, 67-65, for Fifth Straight Victory
February 12, 2025Exactly one week after posting a 12-point road victory at Salisbury University, the 12th-ranked Christopher Newport University squad endured an even tougher battle with the Sea Gulls Wednesday night at the Freeman Center. After trailing for most of the night, the Captains finally pulled ahead with just over five minutes to go and held off the upset-minded Sea Gulls, 67-65. The victory was the fifth straight for John Krikorian's squad, and the tenth in the last 11 games. The Captains are now 19-4, while Salisbury fell to 15-8 with its third straight defeat. -

February 05, 2025SALISBURY, Md. – Christopher Newport University extended its winning streak to four straight games Wednesday night, defeating Salisbury University, 81-69, at the Maggs Center on the Salisbury campus. The victory improved the Captains to 18-4 on the year, while the Sea Gulls fell to 15-6, and had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Hines brothers, Jahn and Collin, combined for 42 of the Captains' 81 points to lead the way. Jahn Hines, a fifth-year senior All-American, led all scorers with 23 points, and junior Collin Hines posted 19 points, with each contributing five rebounds. Sophomore Jason Ofcarcik, who started in place of flu-ridden sophomore Toa Hollenbeck, recorded a near double scoring 12 points and pulling down nine boards. -

February 01, 2025Christopher Newport University never trailed on Saturday as the Captains returned home for the first time in 28 days. CNU, ranked 14th in the nation, won its third straight game by beating UC Santa Cruz, 76-57, at the Freeman Center. John Krikorian's team improved to 17-4 with the victory, while the Banana Slugs fell to 10-11. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines and sophomore Toa Hollenbeck led the CNU attack with 17 points each. Sophomore Ethan Ward added 16 points, and junior Collin Hines registered his fourth double-double of the season by contributing ten points and ten rebounds. -
Huge Second Half Propels15th-Ranked Christopher Newport to 99-77 Win at Pfeiffer
January 26, 2025Christopher Newport University used a big second half effort on Sunday to race past Pfeiffer University, 99-77. The Captains, ranked 15th in the nation, improved to 16-4 on the season while snapping a four-game Falcons winning streak. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led five Captains in double figures with 22 points, scoring 16 during a second half that saw CNU out-score Pfeiffer, 58-39. Pfeiffer, now 9-7, grabbed control of the game in the opening half, surging to a 13-point lead at two different junctures. The Captains trailed 24-11 with 9:40 to play in the opening half, but managed to erase the lead with a 26-12 run, jumping back in front, 37-36, with just over a minute to play in the half. CNU maintained the three-point differential until the intermission, and held a 41-38 edge at the break. -
15th-Ranked Christopher Newport Defeats Cairn, 94-72, as Jahn Hines Scores 30
January 20, 2025After a sluggish start Monday afternoon, Christopher Newport University surged in the second half to beat Cairn University, 94-72. The Captains, ranked 15th in the country this week, trailed the entire first half before out-scoring the Highlanders, 58-30, in the second half en route to the 22-point triumph at Mason Activity Center. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led the way with a 30-point performance, and in the process moved into third place on CNU's all-time scoring list. Sophomores Toa Hollenbeck (25) and Ethan Ward (13) also reached double figures. Junior Collin Hines recorded his third double-double of the season by scoring ten points and pulling down ten rebounds, and also dished out six assists. -
7th-ranked Christopher Newport Falls at Randolph-Macon, 77-72, Snapping Five-Game Winning Streak
January 15, 2025Randolph-Macon College out-scored Christopher Newport University, 9-4, over the final two minutes Wednesday night as the 16th-ranked Yellow Jackets defeated the 7th-ranked Captains, 77-72, in front of 1,013 frenzied fans at Crenshaw Gymnasium. The loss ended a CNU five-game winning streak, and dropped the Captains to 14-4 on the season. Christopher Newport trailed by two at halftime, 36-34, and the teams exchanged the lead 13 times in the back-and-forth battle, with six lead changes coming in the second half. The teams were never separated by more than six points, and were knotted seven times, including a 68-68 tie with 1:58 to play before the 9-4 game-ending run by the Yellow Jackets. -

January 08, 2025Christopher Newport University began a stretch of four straight road contests Wednesday night, recording an 85-66 victory at Johns Hopkins University. The win was CNU's fifth straight, and ninth in the last ten games for the 12th-ranked Captains. Sophomore Jason Ofcarcik came off the bench to lead the way with his first double-double as a Captain. Ofcarcik scored a career-high 21 points and also topped the squad with 11 rebounds as John Krikorian's squad improved to 14-3 on the season. Sophomore Toa Hollenbeck (18) and fifth-year senior Jahn Hines (13) also reached double figures in scoring as the Captains won their first road game of 2025. -

Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led the way with 19 points, one of four Captains to reach double figures in scoring. Sophomore Tyson Henderson scored 18, with 12 coming in the second half, and sophomore Toa Hollenbeck (17) and junior Collin Hines (10) also reached double digits. -
Jahn Hines Posts 37 Points to Lead 18th-ranked Captains over Berry, 79-71, in Shootout Championship
December 30, 2024Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines registered another memorable performance against Berry College (Ga.) on Monday.. Hines, who scored a career-high 39 points at Berry last New Year's Day in a CNU victory, tallied 37 points at the Freeman Center Monday, leading the Captains to a 79-71 victory over the Vikings in the Championship game of the Captains Shootout. The Captains improved to 12-3 with the hard-fought victory, and Hines received the MVP honor of the two-day tournament after setting a new scoring record for the Shootout. The Norfolk native also scored 19 on Sunday in a Christopher Newport victory over Misericordia University in the opening round, as the three-time All-American moved into seventh place on the CNU all-time scoring list. Sophomore Toa Hollenbeck was also selected to the All-Tournament team after scoring 18 points and making six of seven free throws down the stretch to help the Captains seal the victory. Holenbeck posted 17 points on Sunday in the win over Misericordia. -

Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led the way with 19, and sophomore Toa Hollenbeck added 17 as the Captains improved to 11-3 on the season. Christopher Newport will play Berry College (Ga.) in the Championship game of the two-day tournament on Monday, with tip off set for 5:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center. Berry is 7-5 after downing Ferrum College, 83-79 in overtime, in Sunday's other opening round game. Misericordia (6-3) will play Ferrum (9-2) in the third-place game at 3:00 p.m. -

December 20, 2024ophomores Ethan Ward and Tyson Henderson led the way with career highs on Friday, as Christopher Newport University edged Elmhurst University, 82-80, in the Jay Bilas Classic. Ward logged his first career double-double with career highs in points (20) and rebounds (11). Henderson tallied 18 points as the 18th-ranked Captains improved to 10-3 on the season. Elmhurst dropped to 4-7 with its third straight loss. Another CNU sophomore, Toa Hollenbeck, scored 21 points in the opening half, but suffered a back injury late in the half and was unable to continue after coming back briefly in the second half. Junior Collin Hines added eight points, and registered a game-high ten rebounds as the Captains out-rebounded the Blue Jays, 49-39. -

December 19, 2024Christopher Newport University had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday night, as the 18th-ranked Captains fell to 11th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 70-68. The loss came on the opening day of the Jay Bilas Classic at Queens University's Curry Arena. Wisconsin-Stevens Point erased a 15-point first half CNU lead, and held off the 18th-ranked Captains in a physical battle. The game came down to a last-second Christopher Newport three-point attempt that was off the mark, and the Pointers held on and improved to 9-0 with the victory, while the Captains fell to 9-3. -
18th-Ranked Christopher Newport Defeats Mary Baldwin, 96-76, as Jahn Hines Pours in 21
December 07, 2024Christopher Newport University never trailed on Saturday, defeating Mary Baldwin University at the Freeman Center, 96-76. The win was the fourth straight for the 18th-ranked Captains, who improved to 9-2 on the season. John Krikorian's squad broke a 9-9 tie in the opening half and went on a 13-4 run to pull away from the Fighting Squirrels, who fell to 4-4 with the loss. CNU held a 47-33 advantage at halftime, and pushed the lead to as many as 25 late in the second half en route to the 20-point victory. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led the team in scoring for the seventh time this season by pouring in 21 points. Three other Captains joined him in double figures, as sophomore Tyson Henderson netted 14, sophomore Ethan Ward tallied 13, and sophomore Toa Hollenbeck scored 12. Junior Collin Hines pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and also scored nine points. Henderson dished out nine assists to go with his 14 points. -

December 04, 2024Christopher Newport University broke open a close game in the second half Wednesday night, and the 18th-ranked Captains sailed to a 94-76 victory over Marymount University at the Freeman Center. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines scored 15 of his 24 points in the second half, as the Captains upped a one-point halftime lead to the 18-point final verdict. Hines, who has received All-American honors three straight years, made nine of 16 shots for the night, and moved into eighth place on CNU's all-time scoring list, passing Buck Moore. Hines was joined in double figures in the scoring column by a trio of sophomores, Ethan Ward (14), Jason Ofcarcik (12), and Isaiah Dozier (12). -

The victory at the Freeman Center came in the Championship game of the Holiday Inn Invitational. Hollenbeck, the Rookie of the Year last season in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, was named MVP of the two-day tournament after making six of eight three-point attempts. He scored eight points in the opening half and added 16 more after the intermission, with four of his triples coming in the second half. -
Tenth-Ranked Christopher Newport Downs Transylvania, 81-61, in Holiday Inn Invitational
November 30, 2024Christopher Newport University returned to the win column on Saturday afternoon, beating Transylvania University (KY) in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Freeman Center, 81-61. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing his third straight double-double. Two other Captains reached double digits in scoring as sophomore Toa Hollenbech notched 12, and sophomore Jason Ofcarcik added ten points. Hines, a three-time All-American, also contributed three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot as the Captains improved to 6-2 on the year. CNU will play Franklin & Marshall College (PA) Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the Championship of the two-day tourney. F&M downed St. Joseph University (CT) in Saturday's opening game, 59-39. -
Tenth-Ranked Christopher Newport Falls to 5-2 Following 80-65 loss at Averett
November 25, 2024Christopher Newport University fell to 5-2 Monday night thanks to an 80-65 loss at Averett University. Sophomore Jamison Graves exploded for a career-high 36 points to lead the Cougars to the victory at the Grant Center. The tenth-ranked Captains led by as many as ten in the first half before the Cougars, now 4-0, stormed back to pull even at halftime, 33-33. Averett went on to out-score CNU in the second stanza, 47-32, to coast to the victory. Graves knocked down seven three-pointers on eight attempts and logged 15 points in the opening half and 21 more after the intermission. -
Hines Brothers Record Double-Doubles as Christopher Newport Defeats Kean University, 77-63
November 23, 2024Christopher Newport University improved to 5-1 Saturday afternoon with a 77-63 home victory over Kean University (N.J.) at the Freeman Center. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines and his brother, junior Collin Hines, both recorded double-doubles as the Captains led from start to finish to send Kean to a 1-4 record. Jahn Hines led the way with 25 points and ten rebounds while Collin Hines registered 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Ethan Ward came up just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. -
