  • Captains Survive Scare in NCAA Opening Round Game, Advance to Play Hampden-Sydney on Saturday

    Christopher Newport University battled from behind in the second half Friday, and managed to hold off Farmingdale State (NY) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, 61-60. Junior Trey Barber led the way for the second-ranked Captains, scoring 19 points and pulling down 12 rebounds as the Captains improved to 25-3 on the year. The victory at Kirby Field House was the tenth straight for CNU, and the Captains will advance to play host Hampden-Sydney College Saturday night at 7:20 p.m. Barber, who registered his sixth double-double of the season, scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as the Captains erased a ten-point halftime deficit, 32-22. Junior Jahn Hines posted 14 points, and also was key in the second stanza, scoring eight after the half. Fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie also reached double digits with ten points.

    Junior All-American Jahn Hines led top-seeded Christopher Newport University to an 81-73 victory Friday afternoon over UC Santa Cruz. Hines scored 31 points to propel the Captains to their eighth straight victory, advancing CNU to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship game Saturday. The Captains will play the Eagles of Mary Washington in the title game, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. UMW defeated Salisbury Friday in the second semifinal game, 57-50. Hines, a first team All-Conference selection and six-time Player of the Week in the league, scored 14 in the opening half and added 17 more after halftime as the Captains improved their record to 23-3 on the season. Hines made 12-of-17 shots, including three-of-four from long range, and came up just two points shy of his career-high of 33, scored earlier this season. Hines also added four rebounds and two assists, and scored his 31 points in just over 31 minutes of playing time. Fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie also reached double figures by scoring 13 points, and pulled down five rebounds. Fifth-year senior Rodney Graves added nine points off the bench, and freshman Collin Hines posted five points and five rebounds.

  • Third-Ranked Christopher Newport Concludes Regular Season With 71-66 Victory over Mary Washington

    Christopher Newport University concluded the regular season Wednesday night by holding off a stubborn University of Mary Washington squad, 71-66. The victory at the Freeman Center improved the third-ranked Captains to 22-3, and John Krikorian's squad will head to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament next week riding a seven-game winning streak. Fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie came up big after being honored before the game on Senior Night, scoring 20 points for the third time this season. Brodie knocked down five three-pointers and also pulled down four rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Junior Jahn Hines also tallied 20 points, and recorded a double-double by registering a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ty Henderson also reached double figures by scoring 12 points, and filled up his stat line by pulling down seven rebounds, dishing out four assists, making two steals and also blocking a shot. Mary Washington, now 17-7, refused to back down and held a 54-53 lead with 6:38 to play. CNU jumped in front on a three-pointer from Brodie with 6:24 to go, and never relinquished the lead again, hanging onto the lead by knocking down 13-of-18 free throws in the second half, and 16-of-22 for the game (73 percent). The Eagles were led by a game-high 23 points from senior Greg Rowson.

    Sophomore Ty Henderson scored 17 points Saturday afternoon to lead the third-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University over Salisbury University, 85-73, at the Maggs Center. Henderson was one of five CNU players to reach double digits as the Captains won their sixth straight game, and improved to 21-3 on the season. Fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie and junior Jahn Hines tallied 13 each, junior Trey Barber scored 12, and sophomore Caleb Furr added 11 as Christopher Newport won its second game of the year over the Sea Gulls, who fell to 11-13 with the defeat in front of just over 300 observers.

    Junior big man Trey Barber recorded his fifth double-double of the season Saturday as fourth-ranked Christopher Newport University defeated UC Santa Cruz, 74-61. The victory at the Freeman Center, in front of 1,632 spectators, improved the Captains to 20-3 on the season. Barber scored 23 points and also pulled down 12 rebounds as the Captains came from behind in the second half to secure the victory. John Krikorian's squad is now 6-0 this season when trailing at halftime.

    FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Christopher Newport University trailed 22-9 midway through the first half Wednesday night at the University of Mary Washington before the fourth-ranked Captains took control to surge to a 67-53 victory at Ron Rosner Arena. The Captains were led by a career-high 19 points from fifth-year senior Brandon Edmond, who scored the first 12 points of the game for CNU on four three-point shots. John Krikorian's squad held the Eagles to just 26 percent shooting for the night (16 of 62) and UMW knocked down just four-of-26 (15 percent) from three-point range. The Captains improved to 19-3 with the road win, while the Eagles dropped to 15-6 on the season.

  • Fourth-Ranked Christopher Newport Rallies Past Salisbury, 84-74, Behind Career-High 33 Points from Jahn Hines

    Junior Jahn Hines exploded for a career-high 33 points Saturday afternoon as fourth-ranked Christopher Newport University rallied in the second half to beat Salisbury University, 84-74. The Captains improved to 18-3 with the victory in front of 2,214 observers at the Freeman Center. Hines registered 19 first-half points and added 14 more after the intermission to surpass his previous career-high of 29 points set in the season-opening victory at Johns Hopkins University. Hines, an All-American from Norfolk, made 12 of 21 shots for the day, including two of three from three-point range. He also was seven-of-nine at the foul stripe. He has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week four times this year, including this past week, and was averaging 17.5 points per game heading into Saturday's tilt. CNU, coming off a 12-day break, trailed Salisbury at halftime, 47-44, after the teams exchanged the lead four times in the first 20 minutes. The Captains went on to out-score the Sea Gulls in the second half, 40-27, thanks to an outstanding defensive effort.
  • Fifth-Ranked Christopher Newport Posts Dominant 98-59 Triumph at Eastern Nazarene

    Christopher Newport University recorded a 39-point, wire-to-wire victory Monday afternoon at Eastern Nazarene College. The Captains posted 46 points in the opening half and added 52 in the second half in the dominant victory that improved their record to 17-3 on the season. John Krikorian's squad led 19-18 in the opening half before a 13-2 run opened the lead to a dozen. CNU went on to lead at the break, 46-29, and continued the onslaught through the second stanza. The 39-point final verdict was the largest lead of the day. Four Captains reached double figures, led by junior All-American Jahn Hines' 24 points. Junior Trey Barber posted 19 points, seven rebounds and four blcoked shots. Freshman Scott Mullin knocked down four three-pointers in the final three minutes for a career-high 12, and fellow freshman Collin Hines registered his first career double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.

    BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Christopher Newport University began a two-game trip to the Boston area on Saturday, and recorded a 90-79 victory over Bridgewater State University. The Captains, now 16-3, out-scored the Bears in the second half, 56-38, to erase a seven-point halftime deficit to win the first-ever meeting of the schools. Five Captains reached double figures at the Tinsley Center, led by fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie's 20 points. Sophomore Caleb Furr posted a career-high 17 points, with a dozen coming after halftime, to help propel John Krikorian's squad. "Caleb had his best practice of the season Friday morning before we left," Krikorian said. "He proved he deserved the chance and he took advantage of it and really stepped up when we needed it most. I don't think there's any doubt that we don't win today without his performance off the bench."
  • Second-Ranked Randolph-Macon Defeats Fifth-Ranked Christopher Newport, 64-59

    Randolph-Macon College and Christopher Newport University, two teams ranked in the top five in the country, battled Wednesday night at Crenshaw Gymnasium in front of a capacity crowd of 1,200. The second-ranked Yellow Jackets defeated the fifth-ranked Captains, 64-59, in a game that most certainly  lived up to its pre-game billing. R-MC won its 12th straight game, and 57th consecutive home game, by out-scoring CNU in the second half, 42-34. The Captains, now 15-3, had a six-game winning streak snapped. Christopher Newport led at halftime, 25-22, and the back-and-forth battle of top-five programs featured eight lead changes and was tied four times. Junior All-American Jahn Hines led the Captains with 26 points, while junior Trey Barber recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Randolph-Macon, now 14-1, was led by senior Miles Mallory who also registered a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Captains pushed the lead from three to seven in the opening minute of the second half, 29-22, but the Yellow Jackets bounced back and out-scored CNU, 23-15, over the next 11 minutes to move in front, 45-44, with 8:03 remaining. Randolph-Macon broke a tie with a bucket with 6:05 to play, 48-46, and never trailed again. Down the stretch, R-MC surged ahead by as many as eight in the final minute on the way to the five-point final verdict.
  • Seventh-ranked Christopher Newport Downs York (Pa.) in Overtime, 75-72

    Christopher Newport University improved to 15-2 on Saturday thanks to a 75-72 overtime victory over the Spartans of York College. Sophomore guard Ty Henderson knocked down a key three-pointer in the final minute of regulation and then sank a triple in overtime to help propel the Captains to their sixth straight win. York fell to 7-7 for the year, and the Spartans had a five-game winning streak snapped. Fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie led the way for the seventh-ranked Captains, scoring 19 points, with a dozen coming in the second half and overtime. Junior Jahn Hines posted 16, with ten coming in the second half. Henderson also reached double digits with 14 points.
  • Seventh-Ranked Captains Open 2023 With 79-73 Victory over Brandeis

    Christopher Newport University out-scored Brandeis University Monday night in the second half, 48-38, to propel the Captains to a 79-73 victory. The win to open 2023 at the Freeman Center improved the seventh-ranked Captains record to 14-2 on the season. "We were expecting a great battle, and that's what we got," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the win. "Brandeis is a really solid program and we had to work hard for everything we got tonight. We had some guys really step up in the second half, and we made our foul shots, and that was the difference." Junior Jahn Hines led the way with 25 points, and senior Rodney Graves added 23. Graves, who started in place of injured senior Ian Anderson, connected on seven-of-11 shots and made five-of-six free throws in the second half. Hines nailed nine-of-16 shots from the field and knocked down all seven of his shots from the charity stripe for the night to help put the game away. In all, the Captains made 30 of 40 attempts at the line. Sophomore Ty Henderson also reached double digits with 16 points, and sank all four of his free throws in the second half.
  • Seventh-Ranked Captains Post 50-Point Victory over Wilmington (OH)

    Christopher Newport University heads into 2023 with a 13-2 record following a 98-48 victory Friday over Wilmington (OH) College in the Captains Shootout. CNU, ranked seventh in the country, won its fourth straight game and senior Ian Anderson led the way by scoring 11 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Wilmington, now 4-7, held an early 12-11 lead with 13:35 to play in the first half when the Captains grabbed control. CNU would go on to outscore the Quakers, 39-8, over the rest of the first half to take a commanding 50-20 lead at the intermission.  
  • Seventh-Ranked Captains Down Cabrini, 76-55, in Captains Shootout Opening Round

    Christopher Newport University used a balanced attack Thursday to push past Cabrini University, 76-55, in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Captains Classic. The victory at the Freeman Center improved CNU's record to 12-2 for the season, while the Cavaliers fell to 4-7. Four Captains reached double figures in scoring, led by senior Rodney Graves' 13 points. Graves registered ten of his 13 in the second half, as Christopher Newport stretched a six-point halftime lead (32-26) to as many as 23 in the second stanza en route to the 21-point triumph.
  • Top-Ranked Captains Suffer Second Straight Loss, Falling at Virginia Wesleyan on Last-Second Layup

    Two very different halves of basketball Thursday night led to Virginia Wesleyan University defeating Christopher Newport University, 77-76, on a layup at the buzzer. The Marlins, now 11-1, trailed the Captains by 18 at halftime, 43-25, but out-scored CNU in the second half, 52-32, to record the thrilling one-point victory. Junior All-American Jahn Hines scored on a short jumper with four seconds left to give the Captains the advantage, 76-75, but sophomore Omari DeVeaux raced downcourt in the final four seconds and scored on a layup to give the Marlins their fifth straight victory. DeVeaux led all scorers with 27 points, with 20 coming in the second half fueling the Marlins comeback bid. Hines topped the Captains with 24 points, as top-ranked Christopher Newport lost for the second time in a three-day span.
