The first poll of the New Year will have a new No. 1 after No. 18 Christopher Newport toppled top-ranked Emory on Saturday afternoon. Elsewhere, Babson tripped No. 3 Trinity (Conn.) in double overtime, North Park picked up a heady win at Carthage, and Wooster continued its rivalry run against Wittenberg.

No. 18 Christopher Newport pulled away from No. 1 Emory in the closing minutes for an 83-76 win that will likely produce a new top-ranked team in Monday’s Top 25 poll.

Christopher Newport led for much of the game until Emory guard Jair Knight finished a 19-7 Eagles run with a game-tying three with 2:36 to play. The Captains seized the lead back immediately on a Tyson Henderson three-pointer. After the teams traded scores, Jahn Hines’ layup pushed CNU’s lead to five with 36 seconds left, and the Captains hit four late free throws to complete the upset. Recap

"You only get so many chances to win big games, and we took advantage of that opportunity today," CNU head coach John Krikorian said after the game. "I thought our guys really battled and fought through adversity and executed, for the most part, everything we wanted to do today. Just a great effort against a really good program."

Hines brothers Jahn and Collin combined for 29 points and 15 rebounds for Christopher Newport (13-3) which has won four straight and eight of nine. Ben Pearce led Emory (10-1) with 20 points.

Emory’s loss will likely lead to another UAA team at the top of the poll when it is released on Monday afternoon.

No. 2 Washington U. towered over the Little Giants of Wabash, outrebounding them by 12 and outscoring them by 20 in the paint, in a 68-60 victory. Hayden Doyle tallied 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Connor May added nine points and 11 boards off the bench for WashU (10-1).

No. 3 Trinity (Conn.) also had a chance to move into its highest ranking in program history, but Babson beat the Bantams 99-89 in double overtime. Henry Vetter hit a game-tying three for Trinity with 34 seconds left in regulation and Felix Kloman hit a jumper late in the first overtime to do the same for Babson. The Beavers held Trinity to four points in double overtime and pulled away for their seventh win of the year. Alex Stoddard scored 22 points in 45 minutes off the bench for Babson, which has beaten three ranked teams in its last four games.

No. 6 Wooster, which lost to the Beavers on Dec. 30, rebounded with a 67-57 win over Wittenberg, its ninth consecutive over its archrival. Jamir Billings scored 28 points and Jaiden Cox-Holloway grabbed 14 boards for the Scots (12-1, 4-0 NCAC) who outrebounded the Tigers by 20. Wooster now leads the all-time series with Wittenberg 70-60.

WIAC favorite No. 5 UW-Platteville opened conference play with a wire-to-wire 79-64 win at No. 11 UW-Stevens Point. The Pioneers started the game with a 14-3 run and led by double digits most of the way, including a 22-point lead in the second half. Logan Pearson led UW-Platteville (11-1, 1-0 WIAC) with 23 points, and Joey Fuhremann added 16 without missing any of his seven field goal attempts.

No. 22 Stockton shot 59 percent in the second half at home and defeated No. 13 Gettysburg at The Sports Center in Galloway, New Jersey. EJ Matthews-Spratley scored a career-high 41 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the field and 14-for-16 from the foul line for Stockton (10-2). The Ospreys have won seven of eight and will play conference games the rest of the way.

No. 17 Wisconsin Lutheran brought previously unbeaten Marian back to earth by trouncing the Sabres, 76-48. The Warriors shot 62 percent in the first half (13 for 21) and outscored Marian by 20 after the break. Ryan Broeckel led three Wisconsin Lutheran (11-1, 4-1 NACC) players in double figures with 25 points. The 48 points allowed is the Warriors' lowest since January 2007.

North Park moved to 4-0 in the CCIW for the first time since 1982-83, as Taijon Barry sank the game-winning free throw at Carthage in the closing seconds and lifted the Vikings to a 68-67 win. Barry was fouled with the game tied at 67-all and 1.1 seconds remaining. He made the first free throw and Carthage called timeout to ice him. Barry surprised the Firebirds by intentionally missing the second free throw so the remaining second ticked off the clock as soon as someone touched the ball.

Robbie Sieverding picked up his 300th career win as Dubuque beat Gustavus Adolphus, 80-64, in the Norse's final non-conference game of the season. Grady Thompson posted a career-high with 23 points for Dubuque (8-4).

In women’s action, No. 5 UW-Oshkosh opened conference play by stifling UW-Stout, 67-57. The Titans started the second half on an 11-2 run, giving them a 12-point lead, and the Blue Devils could not rally against UWO’s stout defense. Sarah Hardwick posted 15 points and 15 rebounds for UW-Oshkosh (12-0, 1-0 WIAC).

No. 8 UW-Whitewater held UW-River Falls to five field goals in the second half and none in the third quarter, and the Warhawks ground out a 57-50 win at home over the Falcons. Katie Hildebrandt led the Warhawks (11-1, 1-0 WIAC) with 23 points and Kacie Carollo added 11 assists, nine rebounds, and six steals.

Baldwin Wallace moved alone atop the OAC standings with a 67-64 win over visiting Capital. Caely Ressler’s layup gave the Yellow Jackets a 67-59 lead with three minutes left and that proved enough, even though Baldwin Wallace (10-1, 4-0 OAC) didn’t score again. Capital (9-2, 3-1 OAC) missed two game-tying three pointers in the final minute.

No. 17 Hope continued its dominance over archrival Calvin, as the Flying Dutch pulled away for a 72-64 win, their 19 consecutive over the Knights. Calvin drew within three at the end of the third quarter on Katelyn LaRue's layup, but Hope (11-2, 4-0 MIAA) shut out the Knights for the first half of the fourth quarter and made 10 of its 13 free throw attempts that period. Jada Garner scored 19 points, one off her career-high, Olivia Bellows added 10 points, mostly from the foul line.

A couple of teams outside the Top 25 saw their winning streaks end on Saturday afternoon.

Rochester topped Cortland 91-81 in Western New York and ended the Red Dragon's seven-game run. Abby Gress and Erin Lillis combined for 50 points for Rochester (6-4), which shot 56 percent from the field. Jolleen Lusk had a double-double for Cortland, which picked up its first loss since falling to No. 4 Scranton in the season opener.

The University of New England dealt Western New England its first loss of the season, 56-52, in a rematch of last season's CCC tournament final. Faye Veillieux hit a straight-away three in the closing minute to give the Nor'easters a two-point lead and UNE hung on for the win. The victory gives head coach Anthony Ewing 350 in his career.

Linfield went cold in the second half against George Fox and suffered its first loss, 66-56. The Wildcats started the game strong, making six of their first eight shots and both three-point attempts. But the Bruins clamped down on defense and Hanne Hopkins scored 17 points before fouling out for George Fox (9-2, 1-1 NWC), which scored 18 points off 21 Linfield turnovers.
