Mallory has Double-Double for #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had his second straight double-double and third of the season with 28 points and 17 rebounds, both career highs, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped a 77-76 overtime decision at Christopher Newport on Day 2 of the CNU/Holiday Inn Invitational.

How it Happened:

  • Mallory had two buckets sandwiched around a three-pointer by senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) as the Yellow Jackets sprung out to a 7-2 lead three minutes into the contest. The Captains cut the deficit to two before a pair of free throws from sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) made it 13-9 with 12:30 left in the first half. A basket by CNU again made it a two-point contest before a pair of treys by Anthony were followed by a jumper and a triple by Mallory to give R-MC a 24-11 advantage with 9:10 remaining. The Captains narrowed the margin to eight before a jumper by Mallory, a three-pointer by senior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and a follow by Mbangue pushed the lead to 15 at 34-19 with 4:30 left. The Yellow Jackets would end the half with a 41-28 advantage. Mallory had a double-double in the first half with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Anthony had 14 points and four assists.
  • On R-MC's first possession of the second half, a pair of free throws by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) extended the lead back to 15 at 43-28. CNU closed within seven at 47-40 before a jumper by Anthony and a three-pointer by junior Loginn Norton (Chesterfield, Va./James River) made it 52-40 with 13 minutes remaining. The Captains cut it to nine before a layup by Mallory and a trey by Norton made up a 5-1 run as the Yellow Jackets led 60-47 with eight minutes left. CNU would eventually tie the game at 69-69 with 50 seconds left. Mallory missed a jumper with under 30 seconds remaining and the Captains missed a shot at the buzzer to force overtime.
  • CNU won the tap and scored to give them their first lead of the contest before a triple by Robertson gave R-MC a 72-71 edge with four minutes left. A layup by the Captains gave them a one-point lead before a jumper by Anthony put the Yellow Jackets up 74-73 with 3:20 remaining. After another layup by CNU, Anthony hit two free throws with 1:26 left to give R-MC a 76-75 lead. A layup by the Captains with one minute remaining gave them a 77-76 edge. Anthony and Mallory missed jumpers before CNU missed a free throw with 10 seconds left. Anthony had a final shot partially blocked to give CNU the win.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had two players score in double figures. Mallory had 28 and Anthony added 24.
  • Anthony had seven of the team's 17 assists. Mallory and Funderburg both had four, a career best for Funderburg and season high for Mallory.
  • Mallory had five blocks.

  • The Yellow Jackets had their 23-game win streak snapped.
  • Mallory had five blocks to give him 116 for his career, moving past Brandon Braxton for the fifth-highest total in program history.
  • Anthony had one steal to give him 198 for his career, the top total in program history.
  • Anthony has 1,567 career points, moving past Jared Mills, Jesse Hellyer and Justin Wansley into sixth place on the program's all-time scoring list.
  • Anthony has 615 career assists, third on R-MC's all-time list. Anthony is the first player in program history to amass 1,500 career points and 600 assists.
