December 20, 2024 18th-Ranked Christopher Newport Holds Off Elmhurst, 82-80, in Jay Bilas Classic ophomores Ethan Ward and Tyson Henderson led the way with career highs on Friday, as Christopher Newport University edged Elmhurst University, 82-80, in the Jay Bilas Classic. Ward logged his first career double-double with career highs in points (20) and rebounds (11). Henderson tallied 18 points as the 18th-ranked Captains improved to 10-3 on the season. Elmhurst dropped to 4-7 with its third straight loss. Another CNU sophomore, Toa Hollenbeck, scored 21 points in the opening half, but suffered a back injury late in the half and was unable to continue after coming back briefly in the second half. Junior Collin Hines added eight points, and registered a game-high ten rebounds as the Captains out-rebounded the Blue Jays, 49-39.
December 19, 2024 11th-Ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point Holds Off 18th-Ranked Christopher Newport, 70-68 Christopher Newport University had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday night, as the 18th-ranked Captains fell to 11th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 70-68. The loss came on the opening day of the Jay Bilas Classic at Queens University's Curry Arena. Wisconsin-Stevens Point erased a 15-point first half CNU lead, and held off the 18th-ranked Captains in a physical battle. The game came down to a last-second Christopher Newport three-point attempt that was off the mark, and the Pointers held on and improved to 9-0 with the victory, while the Captains fell to 9-3.
December 7, 2024 18th-Ranked Christopher Newport Defeats Mary Baldwin, 96-76, as Jahn Hines Pours in 21 Christopher Newport University never trailed on Saturday, defeating Mary Baldwin University at the Freeman Center, 96-76. The win was the fourth straight for the 18th-ranked Captains, who improved to 9-2 on the season. John Krikorian's squad broke a 9-9 tie in the opening half and went on a 13-4 run to pull away from the Fighting Squirrels, who fell to 4-4 with the loss. CNU held a 47-33 advantage at halftime, and pushed the lead to as many as 25 late in the second half en route to the 20-point victory. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led the team in scoring for the seventh time this season by pouring in 21 points. Three other Captains joined him in double figures, as sophomore Tyson Henderson netted 14, sophomore Ethan Ward tallied 13, and sophomore Toa Hollenbeck scored 12. Junior Collin Hines pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and also scored nine points. Henderson dished out nine assists to go with his 14 points.
December 4, 2024 Jahn Hines Scores 24 Points to Lead 18th-Ranked Christopher Newport over Marymount, 94-76 Christopher Newport University broke open a close game in the second half Wednesday night, and the 18th-ranked Captains sailed to a 94-76 victory over Marymount University at the Freeman Center. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines scored 15 of his 24 points in the second half, as the Captains upped a one-point halftime lead to the 18-point final verdict. Hines, who has received All-American honors three straight years, made nine of 16 shots for the night, and moved into eighth place on CNU's all-time scoring list, passing Buck Moore. Hines was joined in double figures in the scoring column by a trio of sophomores, Ethan Ward (14), Jason Ofcarcik (12), and Isaiah Dozier (12).
December 1, 2024 Hollenbeck's Career-High 24 Points Lead 10th-Ranked CNU over Franklin & Marshall, 72-64 Sophomore Toa Hollenbeck had the hot hand Sunday afternoon, scoring a career-high 24 points to lead Christopher Newport University to a 72-64 victory over Franklin & Marshall College (PA). The victory at the Freeman Center came in the Championship game of the Holiday Inn Invitational. Hollenbeck, the Rookie of the Year last season in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, was named MVP of the two-day tournament after making six of eight three-point attempts. He scored eight points in the opening half and added 16 more after the intermission, with four of his triples coming in the second half.
November 30, 2024 Tenth-Ranked Christopher Newport Downs Transylvania, 81-61, in Holiday Inn Invitational Christopher Newport University returned to the win column on Saturday afternoon, beating Transylvania University (KY) in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Freeman Center, 81-61. Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing his third straight double-double. Two other Captains reached double digits in scoring as sophomore Toa Hollenbech notched 12, and sophomore Jason Ofcarcik added ten points. Hines, a three-time All-American, also contributed three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot as the Captains improved to 6-2 on the year. CNU will play Franklin & Marshall College (PA) Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the Championship of the two-day tourney. F&M downed St. Joseph University (CT) in Saturday's opening game, 59-39.
