March 07, 2025WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team nearly erased a double-digit fourth quarter deficit but came up just short as the Captains (26-2) closed their season with a loss in the NCAA Tournament Opening Round against Montclair State, 67-64. CNU trailed by 11 with seven minutes to play before catching fire with 21 points in the final stretch but the Red Hawks did just enough to hold off the Captains comeback and advanced to Saturday's second round. -

February 15, 2025NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With another suffocating defensive performance, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team improved to 23-1 overall after polishing off a 16th straight win on Saturday afternoon. The Captains dropped Mary Washington, 65-44, on the road and were led by fifth-year seniors Gabbi San Diego (13 pts) and Camille Malagar (12 pts) in the game. -

The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team capped an undefeated run at home and improved to 22-1 overall this season wih a 78-44 victory against Penn State Harrisburg (15-8) on Saturday afternoon. -
Freshman Class Scores 64 as No. 5 Captains Roll to 92-39 Win Over Regent on Saturday
February 01, 2025NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The first career double-double from rookie Emma O'Connor highlighted a dominant performance by the underclassmen on Saturday afternoon as the fifth-ranked Captains improved to 21-1 behind a 92-39 victory against Regent University (1-12). With 64 points from first-year players and all but five points in the game scored by underclassmen, the CNU women's basketball team captured the 14th straight win while maintaining a perfect record at the Freeman Center in 2024-25. -

January 29, 2025GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A career-high 16 points from senior Alexia Lindsey included six points in a pivotal fourth-quarter run that saw the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team come from behind to hold off a gritty Guilford College (11-8) squad on Wednesday evening. Lindsey helped power a 17-4 fourth quarter run that turned a late deficit into a tough road victory for the Captains, who improve to 20-1 on the season. -
Nationally-Ranked Captains Continue Winning Ways After Dropping Mary Washington, 73-49
January 25, 2025NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Despite a slow start that saw the Captains score just five points in the opening quarter, a second-quarter spark turned things around and the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team rolled to a 73-49 win over Mary Washington (7-13) on Saturday afternoon. Playing in front of a raucous crowd of over 700 in the Freeman Center, CNU outscored the Eagles, 31-13, in the second quarter to open up a big halftime lead and never looked back. -

Earning his 300th career win at Christopher Newport, Broderick led the Captains to a 76-31 triumph against the cross-water rivals in the Freeman Center. -

April 01, 2023DALLAS, Texas -- The 2022-23 Christopher Newport women's basketball season came to an epic conclusion on Saturday afternoon, as the Captains ended an historic season with a hard-fought 57-52 loss to second-ranked Transylvania University (33-0) in the NCAA Division III National Championship Game. After erasing a 13-point second-half deficit, the top-ranked CNU squad suffered its first loss of the season and wrapped up the year at the American Airlines Center in Dallas with a 31-1 overall record. -

TICKET PUNCHED! Top-Ranked Captains Headed to Dallas for National Championship After Gritty 56-51 Win in Semifinals
March 18, 2023HARTFORD, Conn. -- Adding yet another milestone to an already unprecedented season, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team advanced to the programs first ever NCAA Division III National Championship Game with a hard-fought 56-51 win over Rhode Island College (28-4) in the semifinals on Saturday night. The Captains erased a 12-point second-half deficit to capture a 31st consecutive victory and booked their trip to Dallas, Texas in a joint championship event with NCAA Division I and II at the America Airlines Center at Noon on April 1, 2023. -

March 10, 2023MEDFORD, Mass. -- Advancing to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Quarterfinals for the fourth time in program history and the first since 2017, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team pulled away from No. 24 Wartburg College (23-7) early and held the Knights at bay for the Sweet 16 win on Friday evening. Playing in Cousens Gymnasium on the campus of Tufts University, the Captains improved to 29-0 with the win and will take on the host and 21st-ranked Tufts Jumbos (24-6) at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. -

No. 1 CNU Women's Basketball Advances to Sectionals With 65-55 Win at Home in NCAA Second Round
March 04, 2023NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Making history as only the fifth NCAA Division III program to ever reach seven consecutive Sweet Sixteens, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will continue it's undefeated ride into next weekend following a 65-55 win over Elizabethtown (23-5) on Saturday night. The Captains improved to 28-0 with another balanced effort led by graduate guard Sondra Fan with 13 points. Under the direction of head coach Bill Broderick in his tenth season, the Captains have advanced to the Round of 16 in all nine NCAA Tournament appearances including an active streak of seven straight. CNU joins an exclusive group of only five NCAA Division III programs to ever put together a run of seven or more consecutive sectional round appearances -- Southern Maine (1987-93 -- 7 straight), Bowdoin (2001-07 -- 7 straight), Amherst (2008-22 -- 14 straight), and Tufts (2012-present -- 11 straight). -

A balanced effort highlighted the win as all but one CNU player got into the scoring column and all but one played 11 or more minutes in the first round victory. -

February 25, 2023The top three teams in Division III women's basketball completed perfect runs to the NCAA Tournament by winning their automatic bids on Saturday. Elsewhere, Knox College secured its first ever Tournament bid, Cortland busted a bubble and the ASC tournament had a surprise winner. -
C2C CHAMPIONS! Top-Ranked Captains Win Fourth Straight Conference Title as Broderick Collects Win No. 250
February 25, 2023FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- With a 75-56 victory over third-seeded Mary Washington on Saturday night, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team won it's fourth straight conference championship and earned the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference's automatic berth into the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. The Captains improved to 26-0 with four players finishing in double figures including a team-high 19 points by Gabbi San Diego. -

February 24, 2023FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team made quick work of the fourth-seeded Findlandia Lions (12-11) on Friday evening in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Semifinals, picking up a 96-61 win to advance to Saturday's championship game. The Captains improved to 25-0 after racing out to a dominating 25-3 run off the opening tip and never looking back for the team's seventh straight win in the conference tournament. -
