    DALLAS, Texas -- The 2022-23 Christopher Newport women's basketball season came to an epic conclusion on Saturday afternoon, as the Captains ended an historic season with a hard-fought 57-52 loss to second-ranked Transylvania University (33-0) in the NCAA Division III National Championship Game. After erasing a 13-point second-half deficit, the top-ranked CNU squad suffered its first loss of the season and wrapped up the year at the American Airlines Center in Dallas with a 31-1 overall record.

  • TICKET PUNCHED! Top-Ranked Captains Headed to Dallas for National Championship After Gritty 56-51 Win in Semifinals

    HARTFORD, Conn. -- Adding yet another milestone to an already unprecedented season, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team advanced to the programs first ever NCAA Division III National Championship Game with a hard-fought 56-51 win over Rhode Island College (28-4) in the semifinals on Saturday night. The Captains erased a 12-point second-half deficit to capture a 31st consecutive victory and booked their trip to Dallas, Texas in a joint championship event with NCAA Division I and II at the America Airlines Center at Noon on April 1, 2023.

    MEDFORD, Mass. -- The undefeated and top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team punched its ticket to the program's third NCAA Division III Final Four on Saturday night as junior point guard Gabbi San Diego put the team on her shoulders in a 72-56 win at No. 21 Tufts University (24-7) in the national quarterfinals.

    MEDFORD, Mass. -- Advancing to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Quarterfinals for the fourth time in program history and the first since 2017, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team pulled away from No. 24 Wartburg College (23-7) early and held the Knights at bay for the Sweet 16 win on Friday evening. Playing in Cousens Gymnasium on the campus of Tufts University, the Captains improved to 29-0 with the win and will take on the host and 21st-ranked Tufts Jumbos (24-6) at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night.

  • No. 1 CNU Women's Basketball Advances to Sectionals With 65-55 Win at Home in NCAA Second Round

    NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Making history as only the fifth NCAA Division III program to ever reach seven consecutive Sweet Sixteens, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will continue it's undefeated ride into next weekend following a 65-55 win over Elizabethtown (23-5) on Saturday night. The Captains improved to 28-0 with another balanced effort led by graduate guard Sondra Fan with 13 points.  Under the direction of head coach Bill Broderick in his tenth season, the Captains have advanced to the Round of 16 in all nine NCAA Tournament appearances including an active streak of seven straight. CNU joins an exclusive group of only five NCAA Division III programs to ever put together a run of seven or more consecutive sectional round appearances -- Southern Maine (1987-93 -- 7 straight), Bowdoin (2001-07 -- 7 straight), Amherst (2008-22 -- 14 straight), and Tufts (2012-present -- 11 straight).

    NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team extended it's winning streak to 27 games on Friday night, capturing an 89-52 win over Brooklyn College (19-8) in the opening round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship. A balanced effort highlighted the win as all but one CNU player got into the scoring column and all but one played 11 or more minutes in the first round victory.

    FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- With a 75-56 victory over third-seeded Mary Washington on Saturday night, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team won it's fourth straight conference championship and earned the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference's automatic berth into the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. The Captains improved to 26-0 with four players finishing in double figures including a team-high 19 points by Gabbi San Diego.

    FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team made quick work of the fourth-seeded Findlandia Lions (12-11) on Friday evening in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Semifinals, picking up a 96-61 win to advance to Saturday's championship game. The Captains improved to 25-0 after racing out to a dominating 25-3 run off the opening tip and never looking back for the team's seventh straight win in the conference tournament.

  • No. 1 Captains Women's Basketball Closes Out Perfect Regular Season With 74-49 Senior Night Win Over Mary Washington

    NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the second straight season, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team captured a perfect regular season by stifling Mary Washington on Wednesday night for a 74-49 victory at the Freeman Center on Senior Night. Fifth-year guard Sondra Fan notched her 200th career three-pointer, becoming only the second player in program history to reach the milestone, and led the top-ranked Captains with 19 points in her final home regular season game. 
  • Anaya Simmons Reaches 1,000 Career Points as No. 1 Captains Remain Undefeated; CNU Downs Salisbury, 69-44

    NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Anaya Simmons became the 29th player in program history to score 1,000 career points in a 69-44 win on the road Saturday afternoon, as the top-ranked Captains improved to 23-0 on the season. The Captains closed out the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record in road games, extending their winning streak while playing as the visiting team to 30.  In addition to adding to the nation's longest road winning streak, the top-ranked Captains also extended the team's season-opening roll overall to 23 straight games. Salisbury fell to 7-17 with the setback.

    NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Behind dominant performances from preseason All-Americans Sondra Fan and Anaya Simmons, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team came from behind with a big second half effort to down UC Santa Cruz (16-5) in the C2C Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Captains improved to 22-0 after Fan matched her career-high with 27 points and Simmons poured in an impressive double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds on 10-of-12 shooting. 
  • Balanced Attack Leads Captains Past Regent for 21st Consecutive Win, 96-42

    NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Holding home court for the 36th consecutive time, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team improved to 21-0 with a 96-42 win over Regent University on Saturday afternoon, as part of the C2C Classic. The Captains had four players finish with a team-high 12 points in the balanced attack, all four of which came from first- or second-year players.  The Captains continued a home winning streak that started in December 2018 while also adding to a season-opening win streak that has now reached 21 games. It is the third longest roll in program history and the second in as many years to reach 20+ games.

    JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Behind a 25-point effort from from senior Anaya Simmons and a dominant defensive performance as a team, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team improved to 20-0 on the season with an 88-64 victory at New Jersey City University on Sunday afternoon. The Captains forced 31 turnovers against the Gothic Knights (9-10) and capped a perfect 3-0 week while extending the nation's leading road winning streak to 29.

    BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Leading an unforgettable performance by the Captains' reserves, Christopher Newport was led by an eye-popping 32 points from rookie McKenna Snively on Saturday afternoon as the top-ranked Captains ran away from Pratt Institute (1-17) on the road, 107-34. Snively scored 32 of an impressive 95 bench points for CNU in the game as four different CNU reserves reached double figures. 
  • Sondra Fan Climbs Into Top-Ten All-Time as CNU Women's Basketball Wins at Marymount, 69-52

    ARLINGTON, Va. -- With her final bucket of the evening at Marymount University (15-4) on Wednesday night, graduate student Sondra Fan slid into the top-ten all-time in scoring at Christopher Newport with 1,328 career points. Fan had 19 against the Saints, helping lead the top-ranked Captains (18-0) to a 69-52 win on the road.  Needing 17 points to tie Misty Hart and Cathy Skinner for ninth on the career scoring chart, Fan scored just three points in the first half. She rallied after halftime, however, knocking down 7-of-9 field goal attempts for 16 points after the break to continue to add to her impressive career resume. The Poquoson, Va. native is the first player to break into the top-ten since Chelsie Schweers in 2008-09; Fan reached the top ten in her 103rd career game. 
  • Top-Ranked Captains Extend Win Streak to 17 With 77-66 Win at Southern Virginia

    BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team remained unbeaten on Wednesday night with a 77-66 victory on the road, downing Southern Virginia University (7-9). The Captains improved to 17-0 behind the third 20+ point performance of the season from senior Anaya Simmons.  Simmons matched her career-high with 10 made field goals while taking a career-high 15 shots. She recorded 23 points in just 21 minutes of action while adding five rebounds against the Knights.
