Wednesday women: BW seizes control

Baldwin Wallace won a back-and-forth battle with Ohio Northern and took a commanding lead in the OAC. Elsewhere, Concordia-Moorhead snapped No. 4 Gustavus Adolphus’ long winning streak while No. 5 Christopher Newport extended its even longer road winning streak.

Baldwin Wallace edged Ohio Northern, 72-71, in a back-and-forth battle that gives the Yellow Jackets a commanding lead in the OAC. Caely Ressler’s layup put Baldwin Wallace in front 70-69 with 1:15 to play. After each team had empty possessions, Brynn Serbin was fouled and made two free throws to put the Polar Bears in front, 71-70. On the ensuing Baldwin Wallace possession, Ressler was fouled with one second left and made both free throws.

Ressler posted a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) for Baldwin Wallce (18-4, 14-1 OAC) which leads the rest of the conference by two games with three to play. Serbin scored 32 points for ONU (13-8, 11-4 OAC).

Concordia-Moorhead used a big third quarter to beat No. 4 Gustavus Adolphus, 73-65, and end the Gusties’ 12-game winning streak.

After a close first half, the Cobbers grabbed a 43-35 lead with a 10-0 run keyed by five straight points from guard Jordyn Kahler. Concordia-Moorhead took the lead to 14 points midway through the fourth quarter on Makayla Anderson’s basket. The Gusties pulled within six a couple of times but the Cobbers made enough free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Anderson finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for Concordia-Moorhead (16-4, 15-2), which sits one game behind Gustavus Adolphus in the MIAC standings.

No. 5 Christopher Newport scored the final 12 points at Mary Washington and rallied past the Eagles, 60-55, to extend its road winning streak to 40 games. The Eagles held a 55-48 lead with 4:29 to play, but would not score again. Hannah Kaloi’s layup gave Christopher Newport a 56-55 lead in the final minute and CNU added four free throws in the final 26 seconds.

MIT outlasted Babson, 69-63, in overtime and repelled the Beavers’ push to get back into the NEWMAC race. MIT’s Alice Hall hit a game-tying three-pointer with 22 seconds left in regulation and then the Engineers scored six straight in the final minute of overtime to improve to 7-1 in conference. MIT remains tied for first with No. 21 Smith (84-26 winners over Mount Holyoke) and Springfield (75-59 winners over Salve Regina).

Mia Castillo notched the sixth triple-double of her career in Baruch’s 76-40 win over Medgar Evers. Castillo racked up 26 points, 11 assists and 18 steals in 37 minutes.
