Saturday men: Bears marooned in opener

Chicago took the lead on a pair of Sam Gage free throws with 6:05 left in the first half and never trailed again as the Maroons defeated No. 5 Washington University 68-60.

Royce Muskeyvalley led the Maroons (7-5) with 14 points, while Alex Pyper and Charlie Hughes added 11 apiece. Wash U. shot just 5-for-11 from the foul line.

No. 1 North Central (Ill.) held No. 8 Wheaton (Ill.) to 29 percent shooting and shot 51 percent itself in a 69-55 Cardinals' victory. Vince Kmiec scored 20 for North Central and Landon Gamble added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 2 Middlebury trailed by 13 in the first half and by 11 as late as the 12:30 mark before rallying to win at Tufts 70-69. Tom Palleschi scored 27 points for Tufts (6-7), but the Jumbos scored just eight points in the final seven minutes. Hunter Merryman came off the bench with 13 points for the Panthers (11-0), while Jake Wolfin added 13 and Peter Lynch and Joey Kizel added 12 apiece.

Third-ranked St. Thomas rolled in a battle of unbeatens, sprinting out to a 41-19 lead and crushing Augsburg 94-52. The Auggies entered the day at 9-0.

No. 4 Rochester overcame a combined 37 points and 14 rebounds from Jake Davis and Michael Friedberg to defeat Emory 89-80. Yellowjackets guard John DiBartolomeo led all players with 34 points and nine assists, while Nate Vernon chipped in 25 points.

Williams held off Bates (5-9) behind 30 points from Taylor Epley in an 80-69 road win. Michael Mayer added 22 for the No. 21 Ephs (12-1) as Bates cut the lead to seven several times in the second half but could get no closer.

No. 7 Adrian fell to 0-2 in conference as Hope defeated the Bulldogs 81-72. The Flying Dutch jumped out to a 16-2 lead and made it enough free throws in the final minute to repel Adrian's comeback bid. Calvin survived to beat Albion 66-63. The Britons have lost five in a row.

Garrett Thiel nailed a jumper with nine seconds left to push No. 10 Ramapo past Rowan 88-87 in overtime. No. 11 UW-Stevens Point survived a scare on the road at UW-Eau Claire. The Pointers held off the Blugolds 54-50 to keep them winless in conference. No. 12 UW-Whitewater needed overtime to get past UW-River Falls, which is also winless in conference, 68-63.

In the ODAC, Guilford led the entire way in its 68-54 win over No. 24 Hampden-Sydney. Both teams are chasing Randolph, which grinded out a 66-65 win over Randolph-Macon, and Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins, who are 4-0 in conference, snapped their four-game losing streak by beating Shenandoah 87-54.

Less than 24 hours after Allegheny lost to DePauw in overtime, the Gators had to play extra minutes again. Allegheny went to Wabash and lost 95-87 in triple-overtime. Daniel Purvlicis scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in 49 minutes for the Little Giants. Ursinus defeated Johns Hopkins in double overtime as Ryan Adams hit a layup with six seconds left.

Mary Hardin-Baylor got double-doubles from Kitrick Bell (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Brian Todd (18 points, 10 rebounds). The Crusaders also got a big win over Texas-Tyler 75-71 in a matchup of ASC division leaders.

Brandon Rash and Ethan Spurlin combined for 54 points and 24 rebounds Saturday, keying Transylvania to a 75-68 win against Defiance. It's the Pioneers' sixth consecutive win after a 4-3 start. Wesley won its seventh consecutive game and matched its win total from last season, beating Mary Washington 65-48 behind a double-double from Paul Reynolds
