Chicago, Ill., January 5, 2013 – The No. 5 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team shot a season-low 40.3 percent from the field as the Bears were upset 68-60 by the University of Chicago in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams Saturday in the Windy City.

Washington University (10-2, 0-1 UAA) continues conference play with a pair of road games next weekend at Emory University Friday, Jan. 11, and at No. 4 ranked University of Rochester Sunday, Jan. 13. Rochester defeated Emory 89-80 in the UAA opener Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.

Junior guard Alan Aboona led all scorers with 15 points, while sophomore forward Nick Burt added a career-high 13 points off the bench. The Bears struggled from the foul line (5-11) and were outrebounded for the second time this season 41-35. The Bears entered the contest leading all NCAA Divisions with a +17.2 rebounding margin.

Washington U. jumped out to a 9-0 lead with 15:13 to play as the Maroons missed their first 11 shots from the field. A jumper by Alex Voss with 12:07 remaining broke the early shooting slump by Chicago. Despite the defensive effort by the Bears, WUSTL had trouble taking care of the ball with five early turnovers.

Chicago (7-5, 1-0 UAA) mounted its comeback at the free-throw line and beyond the three-point arc, connecting on 8-of-11 from the free-throw line and four three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes of play. A dunk by freshman Jordan Smith with 6:41 to play gave Chicago its first lead of the game at 18-17. Aboona drained a three-pointer, his second of the half, on the ensuing trip to get the lead back for Washington U.

Back-to-back three's by Wayne Simon and Alex Pyper pushed Chicago's advantage to six (28-22) forcing a timeout by Washington University. Senior guard Ben Hoener drained a three-pointer from the wing out of the timeout, but Simon responded with his second three of the half to give Chicago the 32-27 lead at intermission.

Washington U. shot 37.5 percent (12-32) from the field in the opening half and had seven turnovers. Aboona led all scorers with 10 points, while Burt added six. Chicago turned seven offensive rebounds into nine second-chance points in the first half.

Chicago continued to extend its lead early in the second half, and a three-pointer by Smith with a defender in his face gave Chicago its largest lead of the game at 50-38 with 16:22 to play. Washington U. responded with a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 52-48 on a three-pointer by junior guard Kevin Bischoff.

The Bears got the deficit down to three (55-52) with 5:27 to play on a floater by Hoener, but that would be as close as the Bears would get. Chicago scored its final seven points at the foul line to seal the upset victory.

Royce Muskeyvalley (14 points), Charlie Hughes (11 points) and Pyper (11 points) all scored in double figures for Chicago, which shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the field and hit 16-of-24 from the foul line. Hughes scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series with Chicago 44-18 … The Bears are 18-8 all-time in UAA openers … Washington U. was picked first in the UAA Preseason Coaches Poll, while Chicago was chosen sixth.
