St. Thomas hands Augsburg its first loss of season

Senior guard Will DeBerg scored 23 points and the No. 3-ranked Tommies (11-0 overall, 6-0 MIAC) had only four turnovers as they handed Augsburg (9-1, 4-1) its first conference loss in Saturday's MIAC men's basketball play at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

St. Thomas, which built a 45-23 halftime lead, shot 54 percent from the field, including 11-of-15 from 3-point range, and had a 38-18 edge in bench points.

The Tommies, who have won 19 of their last 20 games dating back to last season, opened up a 1 1-2 game lead in the conference race.

UST's John Nance had 11 of his 16 points in the second half, and Zach Riedeman chipped in 10 points. Thirteen different players scored for UST. Noah Kaiser and Marcus Alipate each had six assists. UST used runs of 13-0 and 13-2 to build a 20-point lead late in the first half. 

Brett Rasmussen had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Auggies, who shot 36 percent on the game and had 17 turnovers.
