Friday wrap: Big Apple upset

New York University stopped No. 4 Emory's winning streak at 12 and picked up a key victory in the men's UAA conference race. On the women's side, Oneonta State won the battle of Red Dragons and Bowdoin slowed down Tufts.

The Emory Eagles told Around the Nation that, despite their great start and high ranking, they were focused on the first four minutes of Friday night's game at New York University. The Violets led the Eagles 8-2 after four minutes and never trailed again in an 89-73 NYU victory. NYU shot 47.4 percent from the floor (27-for-57) and Carl Yaffe scored 24 points for the Violets (11-1, 1-1). Emory got 24 points and 10 rebounds from Jake Davis before he fouled out.

In the NESCAC, Wesleyan rolled over Little Three rival and 11th ranked Williams 66-43. The Cardinals held the Ephs to three assists and 18 turnovers. Sasha Brown scored 15 points for Wesleyan (12-3, 2-1), which hosts No. 1 Middlebury on Saturday. The top-ranked Panthers took care of Connecticut College 72-56.

Brandeis and Washington U. are the co-leaders in the UAA after two games. The Judges defeated Rochester 78-64 to send the Yellowjackets to their second loss in as many UAA games. Washington U. shot 55.2 percent from the field in beating Case Western in Cleveland, 87-71.

Brockport State scored 64 points in the second half and dispatched No. 21 Buffalo State, 94-70. The Bengals committed 23 turnovers against the Golden Eagles (4-7, 2-2) who won consecutive games for the first time this season. Despite stumbling at Medgar Evers earlier this week, No. 22 Oswego State now has a 1.5 game lead on its next closest SUNYAC competitor after beating New Paltz State, 84-62. The Lakers scored 52 points in the paint.

Ithaca picked up a big road win in the Empire 8 as the Bombers edged Hartwick 73-71. The Hawks are 1-2 in conference after starting the season 12-0 overall. Austin improved to 5-1 in the SCAC with a 68-47 win over visiting Millsaps.

Women's basketball

Oneonta State won the battle of the Red Dragons 67-62 by scoring the final 12 points of its game against Cortland State. Oneonta State is 6-0 in the SUNYAC, 8-4 overall. Buffalo State stayed one game behind by beating Brockport 68-45. The Bengals (12-1, 5-1 in SUNYAC) have won eight straight.

Sara Binkhorst hit the go-ahead three pointer with 56 seconds left to push Bowdoin past Tufts 57-56 on the road. This is a big weekend for the Jumbos who host No. 22 Colby tomorrow. The White Mules defeated Bates 67-57. No. 1 Amherst blasted Hamilton 78-25.

Lauren Picha hit a big shot to send Whitworth's game against Pacific to overtime and then hit another in the extra period to help the Pirates knock off the Boxers 70-68. Centre won its ninth in a row by rallying to beat Colorado College 72-68.
