Stockton snapped No. 20 Montclair State's 17-game winning streak and No. 12 Christopher Newport pulled even with No. 21 Marymount in the CAC standings by beating the Saints on Saturday afternoon.
No. 12 Christopher Newport got big games from forwards Jessica Daguilh and Micah Maloney and handled No. 21 Marymount, 70-52. Daguilh and Maloney combined for 25 points and 19 rebounds, and the Captains (19-2, 13-1) outrebounded Marymount 46-24. Kiana Kirkland added 12 points off the bench for Christopher Newport which is now tied for first in the CAC with Marymount (18-3, 13-1) with four games to play.
Lea Mendolla and Najha Treadwell made back-to-back jumpers to give Stockton a 64-61 fourth quarter lead at home over Montclair State and the Ospreys made enough free throws down the stretch to grab a 69-65 win. Sasha Williams had 20 points, eight rebounds and six blocks for Stockton (14-8, 10-5). Williams now has 520 blocks in her career, second only to Jordan Holmes who finished her career at Denison last season with 642 blocks. Katie Sire had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Montclair State (19-2, 14-1).
No. 14 Scranton outscored Juniata 22-5 in the second quarter and cruised to a 62-45 win at home, avenging its only loss of the season. Katie Feehery logged a double-double for the Lady Royals (20-1, 9-1) who reached the 20-win plateau for the 33rd time in the program's 44-year history. Scranton sits two games in front of Juniata (18-3, 7-3) in the Landmark Conference standings.
No. 13 UW-Oshkosh rallied from an 11-point third quarter deficit, only to see UW-Eau Claire pull away in the fourth quarter for a 67-62 win. The Titans trailed the Blugolds 46-35 in the closing minute of the third period after Maddie Dunathan made a three-pointer for Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh (17-3, 7-3) scored the next seven points to close the gap and briefly took the lead 51-50 on Eliza Campbell's layup. But Jenni LaCroix immediately answered with a three-pointer to put Eau Claire (15-6, 7-3) back in front to stay. LaCroix scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Oshkosh, Eau Claire and La Crosse are tied for second in the WIAC, one game behind No. 19 UW-Whitewater which crushed UW-Stout 94-52.
No. 1 Amherst stayed perfect without much difficulty, as the Mammoths hammered Bates 58-31. Amherst (22-0, 8-0) held the Bobcats to single-digit scoring in each quarter. No. 2 Wartburg kept its perfect record in tact with an 88-68 win at home over Simpson. Katie Sommer scored 32 points and dished out six assists and sister Kristie chipped in 13 points for the Knights (21-0, 12-0). Amisha Herd passed the 1000-point milestone as No. 23 Marietta breezed past Heidelberg, 98-64.
Outside the Top 25, Rose-Hulman extended its winning streak to 16 games with a 50-44 win over Bluffton. The Fightin' Engineers, who lead the HCAC by three games, held Bluffton to 26 percent shooting. Mount St. Mary won a similarly low scoring game at SUNY-Old Westbury, 50-38, and protected its lead in the Skyline Conference.
Bria Smith and Gabrielle Harris scored 24 points apiece for FDU-Florham and the Devils defeated DeSales 72-60 to split their season series. Smith also had 16 rebounds and four steals for FDU-Florham (15-6, 8-2). King's topped Eastern 58-44 to remain tied with FDU-Florham atop the MAC Freedom. Those teams meet in Wilkes-Barre in the regular season finale.
Gettysburg held off Haverford 55-54 to keep pace with Muhlenberg in the Centennial Conference. Ashley Gehrin's free throw with four seconds left staked the Bullets (18-2, 14-1) to a four-point lead and it ended up being the game-winning shot when Haveford's Samantha Wetzel hit a three at the buzzer. Albion's reserves outscored Calvin's 20-0 and the Britons beat the Knights 72-67 for their first win over Calvin in nine-plus years. Albion is one-half game back of Calvin for third place in the MIAA standings, but both teams are likely to make the four-team playoffs.
In early men's action Robert Tobroxen scored 24 points to lead St. Olaf past No. 4 St. John's 75-62. The Oles shot 59 percent (31-for-53) and never trailed in their successful bid to end the Johnnies' 16-game winning streak. St. Olaf sits 2.5 games back of St. John's (18-2, 14-1) in the MIAC.
No. 11 Lycoming lost for the second Saturday in a row, this time falling at home to Arcadia 101-91. The Knights' starting back court of Josh Scott, Brandon Thompson and Da'kquan Davis rolled up 58 points with 11 three-pointers. Arcadia (12-9, 7-5) shot 53 percent (17-for-32) from three. Lycoming (19-3, 10-3) had its lead in the MAC Commonwealth cut in half since Albright topped Lebanon Valley 86-76.
Lynchburg guard Austin Wrighten was fouled with one second left and made both free throws to lift the Hornets over No. 19 Emory and Henry, 81-79. Lynchburg (11-10, 5-7) had four players reach double figures led by Connor Schroeder who had 20 points. All five starters scored double figures for the Wasps (18-3, 10-2) who have dropped two straight. Emory and Henry also lost its lead in the ODAC because Randolph-Macon beat Guilford 75-63 and moved into a tie for first.
No. 22 Marietta has the longest active streak of consecutive Top 25 appearances, but that is in jeopardy because the Pioneers lost at home to Heidelberg, 71-65. The Student Princes erased a 13-point halftime deficit and outscored Marietta 34-12 in the paint. Marietta (16-5, 10-4) slipped one game back of John Carroll, which beat Wilmington 109-81, in the OAC race.
Outside the Top 25, the CSAC played the CUNYAC in a series of crossover games. CUNYAC leader Lehman topped Gwynedd Mercy 85-68 as Mylo Mitchell and Luis Hernandez combined for 40 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Lightning (18-4). Cabrini held off Staten Island 76-74, despite not making a field goal for the final three-plus minutes of the game. Cabrini big man Tyheim Monroe, who leads Division III with 20 double-doubles, picked up another by scoring 29 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.
