Heidelberg upsets #22 Marietta 71-65

MARIETTA, Ohio — Heidelberg University upset No. 22 ranked Marietta College, 71-65, Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers fall to 16-5 overall and 10-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Student Princes improve to 9-12 on the season and 5-9 in league play.

Kyle Dixon led four Pioneers in double figures with 16 points. He also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists. DeVaughn Wingard scored 12 points and Caleb Hoyng added 11 points. Dillon Young finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Chris Moxley led the Student Princes with 19 points and seven boards. Myron Prewitt added 18 points, while Mike Mason notched 14 points and seven rebounds.

Marietta jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held the lead throughout the first half. The Pioneers took a 42-29 advantage into halftime.

MC extended its leads to as many as 15 points in the second half. The Student Princes trimmed the deficit to two points, 53-51, midway through the second half. But Hoyng hit a three-pointer to cap a 9-2 Marietta run pushing the margin back to eight points, 62-54, with 7:09 remaining.

That was the last field goal the Pioneers would make in the game. Heidelberg scored 11 straight points to take its first lead of the afternoon, 65-62, with 2:43 left on the clock.

Marietta's shooting woes continued and Mason, a former Pioneer, scored on a layup with 17 seconds left to give Heidelberg a four-point cushion, 69-65.

The Pioneers got a pair of three-point shots on their next possession both neither found its mark. Kiere Bennie iced the game with a pair of free throws in the final seconds.

For the game, Marietta shot 34.4% (21-of-61) from the floor, 34.5% (10-of-29) from three-point range and 86.7% (13-of-15) at the free throw line. The Student Princes were 28-of-63 (44.4%) from the floor, 7-of-19 (36.8%) behind the arc and 8-of-12 (66.7%) at the line.

Heidelberg edged the Pioneers on the glass, 40-38. Marietta turned the ball over 13 times, while the Student Princes committed 10 turnovers.

Marietta travels to Capital University on Wednesday (Feb. 7) for a 7 p.m. tip off against the Crusaders.
