ASHLAND, Va. - Freshman Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had eight assists and 14 points, one of four Yellow Jackets to score in double figures, as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Guilford 75-63 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gym.
The Yellow Jackets (16-5, 10-2 ODAC) moved into a tie for first place in the ODAC standings with Emory & Henry following the Wasps' 81-79 loss at Lynchburg. The Quakers (12-9, 8-4) are tied with Washington and Lee for third place.
Anthony had three field goals and went 8 for 10 from the free throw line. Senior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) and junior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) both scored 11 points, while junior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) added 10 points along with seven rebounds.
GC scored the first bucket of the game before R-MC took its initial lead at 6-5 on a layup by Williams with 17:25 remaining in the first period. The Quakers were ahead 9-8 before three-pointers by junior Luke Neeley (Orange, Va./Woodberry Forest) and Williams gave the Yellow Jackets a 14-9 advantage with 11:35 left. GC scored 10 straight to go up 19-14 with 9:20 remaining. R-MC would close the half on a 23-8 run, capped by a Neeley trey with one second left, as the Yellow Jackets led 37-27 at intermission. Neeley had nine first-half points, followed by Williams with seven. R-MC held a 13-2 advantage on points off turnovers, as GC committed 10 miscues compared to a pair for the Yellow Jackets.
Adams made a layup to start the second half, giving R-MC a 39-27 lead. GC used an 8-3 spurt to cut the deficit to seven at 42-35 with 13:35 remaining in the second period. Three-pointers by sophomore Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) and Noe capped a 15-4 run as the Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to 57-39 with 8:40 remaining. A follow by Adams made it a 20-point game at 64-44 with 6:10 left. The Quakers cut the deficit to 13 at 70-57 with 2:10 remaining before a tap by junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) pushed the lead back to 15 at 72-57 with 1:40 left. The Yellow Jackets scored their final three points from the free throw line in recording the 75-63 win.
R-MC held a 30-18 advantage on points in the paint, and 20-11 on points off turnovers.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 with a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Virginia Wesleyan.
