Saturday: Going green

No. 24 St. Norbert topped No. 5 UW-Oshkosh as the Green Knights controlled both ends of the court in a 62-50 victory.

The Green Knights built a 40-31 lead midway through the second half and then put the game away when Jill Kleiman hit a three-pointer and Heidi Van Sistine followed with a layup.

St. Norbert shot 51.9 percent from the field and held the Titans to 34 percent shooting (17-for-50). The Green Knights blocked 10 Oshkosh shots and forced 20 turnovers.

St. Norbert improved to 5-1 and 3-1 against WIAC opponents. Oshkosh drops to 5-1.

No. 22 Illinois Wesleyan bounced back from its first loss of the season with a win against previously unbeaten DePauw, 79-75. The ninth ranked Tigers erased a 17-point deficit and briefly took the lead, but the Alina Lehocky's put back put the Titans back in front for good. Rebekah Ehresman scored 25 points, including three late free throws, for Illinois Wesleyan.

Messiah shook off its slow start to the season with a 78-65 win over No. 21 Lebanon Valley to open Commonwealth Conference play. The Falcons, who dropped out of the Top 25 after losing three of their first four games, had five players score double-figures.

Sydney Moss scored the 1,000th point of her Thomas More career in just her 36th game as a Saint and, Thomas More rolled over La Roche, 97-46. Moss also scored 438 points in her freshman season at Division I Florida.

V.J. Billups scored 16 points for Hanover which has alternated wins and losses through its first four games.

Hanover took advantage of 17 turnovers by No. 5 Wooster and took 28 more free throws in a 70-57 upset victory over the Scots.

With the game tied at 41, the Panthers went on a 14-2 run and held Wooster to one field goal over a nearly ten minute stretch. Hanover evened its record at 2-2 while Wooster slipped to 3-1. On Wednesday the Scots open NCAC play against No. 21 Ohio Wesleyan, which defeated Defiance 77-63.

North Central (Ill.) stayed perfect by beating No. 11 UW-Stevens Point 63-56 in Wisconsin. Charlie Rosenberg led the Cardinals with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Joe Ritchay scored 21 for the Pointers on nine field goals but his teammates shot 11 for 40 (28 percent).

No. 7 Dickinson capped a rough week for No. 18 Cabrini by beating the Cavaliers 95-81 on their home court. It was Cabrini's first non-conference loss at home during the regular season since December 2008. Preseason All-American Gerry Wixted led the Red Devils in points (29), rebounds (11), assists (five) and blocks (three).

No. 16 MIT tied Fitchburg State on a late three-pointer in regulation and then put the Falcons away in overtime, 63-58. Andrew Acker posted a double-double for the Engineers (22 points, 12 rebounds).

Two coaches collected milestone victories on Saturday. Bosko Djurickovic notched his 300th victory at Carthage when his Red Men edged UC-Santa Cruz 54-53 in overtime. Glenn Robinson won his 876th game as Franklin and Marshall beat Elizabethtown, 87-65. Robinson, who already has the most wins in Division III basketball, is now tied with former Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp for seventh place on the all-time NCAA list.

Gwynedd-Mercy didn't score a victory for Division III over a Division I opponent, but the Griffins came close at Howard. Gwynedd-Mercy fell to the Bison in double overtime, 96-83. Taylor Hamasaki and Colin Zavrsnick combined for 43 points and Chapman stayed perfect with a 72-67 win over Whitman. Hiram also stayed unbeaten with a 54-42 win at Penn State-Altoona.
