WASHINGTON -- Gwynedd Mercy took Division I Howard to double overtime but fell to the Bison, 96-83, Saturday evening in an exhibition contest for the Griffins.
Gwynedd had chances to go ahead at the end of regulation and the first overtime but foul trouble in the second extra session enabled Howard to hit the free-throw line to pull away.
Sophomore Aaron Goodman led GM with 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Junior Darnell Artis chipped in 18 and Brian Hennessey added 12.
James Miller led all scorers for the Bison, out of the MEAC, with 33 points. James Carlton added 23 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The first half saw no team lead by more than six. Gwynedd looked to take a one-point lead into the half, but the Bison was able to score a bucket at the buzzer off a tipped inbound pass for a 31-30 score at the break.
The Griffins trailed for almost the entire second, keeping a single-digit deficit to stay within striking distance. Down six (66-60) with 1:30 to play, GM got it to four before a big three-pointer from Artis with 22 ticks left got it to a one-point game. Artis later hit two free throws to knot it at 67-67 with 14 seconds to play. Both teams would trade free throws where it would stand at 69-69 at the end of regulation.
In the first overtime, Hennessey hit one of his three-pointers for a 78-76 edge with 36 seconds remaining before Miller made two from the free-throw line. A final possession from the Griffins resulted in a foul, where GM had two chances take a lead, but was no good. The Bison took advantage of the Griffin foul trouble, as a total of five players including three starters would foul out, depleting the bench. Miller would drain a three-ball to give Howard an 84-78 early on. GM, who was 40% from the floor, would shoot 1-for-8 in the second overtime while the Bison would go 9-of-11 at the line.
Howard held a slim 38-36 rebound edge. Goodman, Justin Knight, and Julian Hyden led Gwynedd with seven caroms apiece.
GM went 26-of-65 shooting-wise and 12-of-26 from long range. The Bison turned in a 60.4% (29-of-48) effort.
Gwynedd Mercy gets back to action on Wednesday when they welcome Cairn in a CSAC matchup at 8 p.m.
