(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – Junior guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) crossed the 1,000th career point plateau at Thomas More College today (Saturday, November 28, 2014) as the third-ranked Saints defeated La Roche College, 97-46, on the second day of the 13th Annual Julie Costello Memorial Classic presented by Barleycorn's at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints remain undefeated as they improve to 4-0 and with the loss, the Redhawks fall to 1-3.
Thomas More jumped out to 13-3 lead when senior guard Sydni Wainscott (Erlanger, Ky./Simon Kenton) made a jumper with 15:34 to play in the first half. La Roche used a 16-4 run to take a 19-17 lead with 8:21 to play in the first half when Demetria Coleman made a lay-up. The Saints closed out the first half on a 27-7 run to take a 44-26 lead at half time when sophomore forward Kaylee Bush (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) made a lay-up with 17-seconds to play in the half.
The Saints out-scored La Roche 53-20 in the second half they won the game 97-46. Moss became the 16th player in Thomas More women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points as a Saint when she made a lay-up with 9:36 to play in the game to increase her career total at Thomas More to 1,001 points. She reached the 1,000 mark in only 36 games a Saint. With her 438 points her freshman year at the University of Florida, Moss has 1,439 collegiate points.
Moss had her third double-double of the season as she had a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Sam Cady (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and junior guard Kiley Bartels (Southgate, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) joined her in double-figure scoring with 12 and 11 points respectively. Senior guard Stephanie Krusling (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) and freshman guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) led the team in assists with four each.
At the conclusion of the classic, Moss was named Most Valuable Player and Cady joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
Thomas More opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday (December 3) when it travels to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania to play Waynesburg University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
