Principia snapped a losing streak more than two full years in the making on Tuesday night as the Panthers defeated Millikin 83-74.

The Panthers had lost 57 consecutive games, dating to an 82-67 home win vs. Eureka on Feb. 12, 2011. Just six of the 57 losses were by fewer than 10 points.

Bowdoin's Tim Gilbride picked up his 400th win as a men's basketball head coach and the Polar Bears stayed undeated with a 67-56 win at Southern Maine. John Swords led Bowdoin with 25 points and 16 rebounds, nine of them offensive. The Polar Bears outrebounded the Huskies by nine and scored 22 second chance points.

Gilbride is in his 29th season as Bowdoin's head coach. In addition to his men's basketball wins, he won 82 games as the women's basketball head coach at Division I Providence and took the Bowdoin men's soccer team to the NCAA Tournament twice.

The NESCAC's three ranked teams also posted victories. Aaron Toomey scored 37 points and No. 1 Amherst defeated Westfield State 83-59 on the road. No. 10 Williams scored 64 first half points and rolled over RPI, 113-88. No. 19 Middlebury outscored Castleton State by 20 in the paint and 10 points overall, 90-80.

No. 15 WPI held off Tufts 70-67 for its 20th straight win at home. The Jumbos reserves outscored their starters 40-27.

Outside of New England, Cortland State defeated archrival Ithaca in a meeting of 2013 NCAA tournament teams, 79-63. Kevin McMahon and Lamard Herron combined for 53 points for the Red Dragons (3-0). Hartwick defeated its next door neighbor Oneonta State 86-78 in overtime.

Kevin Stapleton scored a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift Juniata past Carnegie Mellon in the Tartans' first road game of the season, 70-67.

Women's recap

Mary Kate Tierney and Ithaca earned bragging rights over rival Cortland State.

No. 18 Ithaca rallied past Cortland State 72-62 in the latest installment of their Upstate New York rivalry. The Red Dragons and Bombers traded leads throughout the second half with neither team having much of an advantage until Ithaca went on a 14-2 run to pull away.  Mary Kate Tierney hit a three to give the Bombers the lead for good and finished with 28 points.

Oneonta State scored the final 13 points of its game against Hartwick and dealt the Hawks their first loss of the season, 52-46. The tournament previously known as the JP Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament (now Wendy's Classic) opened on the women's side. Geneseo State, Rochester, St. John Fisher and Division II participant Roberts Wesleyan advanced to the winners' bracket.

Haverford remains the lone unbeaten team in the Centennial Conference after taking care of Washington College, 62-43. The Fords are 5-0 for the first time in program history. Johns Hopkins improved to 4-0 in the Centennial Conference and 5-2 overall with a 62-52 win over visiting Gettysburg.

Susan Kies turned in a game-high 22 points, while fellow senior Malarie Gilley added 13 points and a career-high 24 rebounds as Buena Vista held off Martin Luther 88-74.

The nationally ranked teams in action on Tuesday night dominated with defense. No. 14 Emory forced 35 turnovers by Sewanee and beat the Tigers 63-42. No. 13 Williams held an opponent under 50 points for the fifth time in seven games, this time stifling Skidmore 55-34. No. 9 Tufts allowed Salem State to score just 14 first half points and the Jumbos rolled to victory, 83-44. Fifth-ranked Amherst shut down Emmanuel 77-56.
