Blue Jays Top Bullets inside Goldfarb

BALTIMORE – Gettysburg College committed a season-high 25 turnovers as Johns Hopkins University defeated the defending Centennial Conference women's basketball champions 69-59 inside Goldfarb Gym Tuesday night. 

Johns Hopkins (5-2, 4-0 CC) has defeated Gettysburg (4-2, 2-2 CC) on its floor in each of the past three seasons.  The Blue Jays pulled off the win by shooting 37.7 percent from the floor, canning 24 free throws, dishing out 18 assists, and recording 16 steals – all season highs by a Gettysburg opponent. 

Sophomore Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) led the Bullets with her first double-double of the season. Porter logged season highs for points (16), rebounds (11), and blocked shots (3). Senior Alyssa Isler (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) added a dozen points, while senior Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) turned in 11 points and nine rebounds.

Four of Johns Hopkins' starters reached double-figures with Alyssa Fleming leading the way with 15 points. Ciara Mccullagh added 13 points, while Katie Clark and Fatu Conteh added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Conteh logged a double-double by grabbing 10 boards to go with four assists and three steals. 

Johns Hopkins came out firing, knocking down its first three shots to grab a 6-0 lead. The hosts pushed the advantage to nine following a three-pointer by Fleming which made it 15-6 at 15:28.

The Blue Jays only managed to connect on a pair of free throws over the next six minutes as Gettysburg made a dash to the front. The Bullets reeled off a 12-2 run capped by a lay-up by Murphy to take an 18-17 lead with 9:04 remaining in the first half. 

The lead would change hands twice more with the visitors last holding the upper-hand at 27-26 following a three-pointer by Isler with 2:41 left in the period. A lay-up by Mccullagh 18 seconds later handed the lead back to Johns Hopkins for good. Conteh capped the half with a bucket in the lane to send the hosts into the locker room with a 32-29 advantage. 

Gettysburg kept the game close for most of the second half, never letting the lead get past six until the final seven minutes of the contest. After the lead was cut to four with under five minutes to play, the Blue Jays went on a decisive 7-0 run to take a 60-49 advantage with 2:34 to play.

Gettysburg finished 21-of-53 (39.6 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Bullets held a 42-34 advantage on the boards. 

Sophomore Emily Duggan (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) posted eight points and seven rebounds and senior Rianna Doane (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) added seven points for Gettysburg.

Gettysburg hosts Washington College in its final home game of the first semester on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m.
