ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's women's basketball team led by seven points with a little over four minutes left in the game but visiting Oneonta State ended the game on a 13-0 run to earn a 52-46 win on Tuesday night at Lambros Arena. Alyshia Crawford and Sarah Longto, the Red Dragons' top scorers on the night, combined for 10 points in the final four minutes and change.
The loss is the first of the season for the Hawks after a 5-0 start. Oneonta State improves to 4-1 and snaps a two-game winless streak against 'Wick.
Hartwick's Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) recorded a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) contributed a team-best 15 points and five boards.
Crawford would score a game-high 19 points, which included four three-pointers. Longto netted 15 points and pulled down 11 boards. She also had four blocked shots.
Two free throws from Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) would put Hartwick in front by a margin of 46-39 with 4:21 remaining before a Lyteshia Price layup on the opposite end trimmed the margin to five. Crawford then picked up a steal, converted a layup, and was fouled before sinking her subsequent free throw and suddenly the lead was just two, 46-44, just 30 seconds after Arduini's pair from the line.
The Red Dragons got a stop on defense and following a foul, Longto sank two from the line to tie the score. After a Hartwick miss on its next possession, Longto gave SUCO the lead for good with a layup with 2:26 to go.
The Hawks had three possessions with a chance to tie the game or take the lead but they could not convert. Foglia would miss a runner in traffic with 19 seconds showing on the clock and Crawford would get the rebound. She was fouled and calmly drained two with 18.2 seconds left to make it a two-possession game, 50-46.
Longto would tack on her 14th and 15th point of the night with seven seconds left to cap a 9-of-10 showing at the line to close out the Oneonta victory. The Red Dragons would end up hitting 18-of-20 (90%) from the line as a team.
The first half of play featured eight leads changes and four tie scores in a back and forth opening 20 minutes. The largest margin for either team through the first 19 and a half minutes was four points, which the Hawks achieved twice. A three-pointer from Dumas would hand 'Wick a 25-20 advantage at halftime.
A quick 7-2 run in the first two minutes of the second half, thanks to three-pointers from Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) and Foglia, gave Hartwick its biggest lead of the night, 32-22.
The Hawks maintained at least a five-point lead for the next five and a half minutes when a Dumas layup with 12:35 left in the game made the score 40-33 Hartwick's favor. The basket, however, would mark the Hawks' final one of the contest.
They would miss their next 10 shots from the floor over a six-minute span before two Dumas free throws kept 'Wick up seven, 42-35. Just under a minute later, she added two more for a 44-37 edge before Arduini's points from the line ended Hartwick's scoring for the evening.
'Wick would shoot only 24.6% (14-for-57) from the field and 23.1% (6-for-26) from three-point range in the game, including 5-for-30 (16.7%) and 2-for-15 (13.3%) in the second half alone. The Red Dragons would shoot 34.1% (15-for-44) from the floor in the game.
Arduini would end the game with seven points. She dished out a game-high four assists and grabbed three steals. Purcell had a game-high four steals.
Hartwick is back in action at Lambros on Thursday. The Hawks host The Sage Colleges at 6 p.m.
