Washington College won its first game of the season, and it was a big one, too, as the Shoremen knocked off No. 14 Franklin and Marshall 62-61.
Down a point, the Diplomats called a timeout with seven seconds left to set up the final play of the ballgame. F&M got the ball to Hayk Gyokchyan who drove the basket, but his layup was nowhere near the basket and Shoremen guard Kevin Cunningham grabbed the rebound and the time ran out and Washington got its first victory of the season.
F&M shot 49% from the floor and outrebounded Washington College 34-20, but couldn't convert those rebounds into enough points to make the difference. Full story
For the second Saturday in a row, No. 3 Middlebury remained undefeated by dodging a bullet, this time as home as the Panthers defeated Wesleyan 78-77 in overtime. Joey Kizel scored 19 and Nolan Thompson added 18 in the win. Second-ranked St. Thomas staked its claim to the No. 1 ranking in next week's poll, using a 23-0 run to open up a 50-22 lead on archrival St. John's and went on to roll past the Johnnies 94-63.
UW-Whitewater had a chance to tie the game from the foul line with six seconds left but Quardell Young could only make one of two, forcing the No. 11 Warhawks to foul and allowing UW-Superior to finish off the upset 69-66.
No. 24 Randolph got bounced from the ranks of the unbeaten, losing 72-66 at Virginia Wesleyan. While the WildCats were led by Colton Hunt's 29 points, Virginia Wesleyan got balanced scoring, with three players scoring 11, two with nine and two with seven.
Quincy Pettiford scored 24 points on 6-for-9 from 3-point range and David Langan and Paul Reynolds each had double-doubles which included a game-high 13 rebounds as Wesley knocked off No. 9 St. Mary's (Md.) 68-54. It's the Wolverines' ninth consecutive win.
Transylvania bounced back from Wednesday's loss at Hanover and won at No. 23 Rose-Hulman 69-60. Ethan Spurlin capped a 9-0 run with a layup with 1:40 left to break open a tie game; he finished with a game-high 19.
Top-ranked North Central (Ill.) rallied after its midweek loss, defeating No. 17 Augustana 59-46 without injured Aaron Tiknis. The Cardinals played just seven players, plus an eighth for three minutes. Landon Gamble scored a game-high 22.
Doug Thorpe and Kenny DeBoer combined for 31 points and 14 rebounds as No. 15 Wooster topped DePauw 68-58. Andy Winters scored 28, had seven rebounds and five assists as No. 16 Ohio Wesleyan improved to 13-1 with a 79-73 win against Allegheny. Darius Watson was held to five points, but five other players scored in double figures for No. 19 Albertus Magnus in a 97-90 win at Emmanuel. No. 13 Christopher Newport bounced back from its loss to N.C. Wesleyan as Tra Benefield poured in 34 points in an 86-76 win against LaGrange.
LeTourneau was down by 11 with 1:50 to go and stormed back to force overtime including a last-second shot and 11 points from Ladaria Brown in the final minute. The Jackets went on to beat Mississippi College in overtime, 81-79. Video highlights.
Buena Vista won its 10th consecutive game, making up for a missed change to win in regulation by beating Dubuque in overtime, 70-68. The Beavers, who are 11-3 and 3-0 in the Iowa Conference, had led by 10 points with five minutes left in regulation. Patrick Sabatino scored a career-high 26 points to help propel Stevens to a 74-68 win over St. John Fisher. The Ducks move to 11-1, 4-0 in the Empire 8.
Arcadia matched its season-long win total from last year, finishing the game on a 20-6 run to beat Messiah 95-81. The Knights start four freshmen under new coach Justin Scott. Arcadia is 9-5, 5-3 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Tom DeCiantis hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to lift Rhode Island College past Keene State 58-55. La Roche charged back from a 13-point halftime deficit to force overtime and outlast AMCC rival Penn State Behrend 71-69 in a three-overtime thriller. Lionel Perkins scored 16 points in the win, all of them after halftime.
