Transy mounts second-half comeback to top Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Transylvania used a big second-half comeback Saturday to hand Rose-Hulman its first Heartland Conference loss of the year, a 69-60 decision at Hulbert Arena.
 
The Pioneers are now 11-4, 6-2 HCAC, while the Engineers are 13-2, 7-1 in league action.
 
Transy trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and by 10 at halftime before mounting a furious late comeback. The Pioneers outscored the Engineers 43-24 over the final 20 minutes.
 
Transy used a Barrett Meyer three-pointer to take its first lead since the early going, 56-54, with 6:15 to play. After Rose-Hulman tied it up, the Pioneers scored nine unanswered points to take a 65-56 edge on Ethan Spurlin's layup at the 1:40 mark.
 
Spurlin, who went over the 1,000-point mark in the first half, finished with 19 points and six rebounds while Meyer had 18 points and six boards and Brandon Rash notched 17 points and four rebounds.
 
Tate Cox made three of four free throws in the final minute and finished with six points. Taylor Botkin came off the bench to get seven points and four rebounds.
 
Both teams shot 45 percent from the field and made eight three-pointers. Transy was 21 of 25 from the free throw line while Rose-Hulman made 16 of 22. Julian Stickland had 18 points to lead Rose and Austin Weatherford added 16.
 
After Transy scored the game's first bucket, Rose-Hulman went on a 17-0 run to take a 17-2 advantage. Transy battled back, getting back-to-back three-pointers from Meyer to get within nine, 35-26, before the Engineers hit one of two free throws for a 10-point edge at intermission.
 
Spurlin had six points in the period. He entered play with 999 points and joined teammates Meyer and Rash in the 1,000-point club. He is the 45th men's player to reach that plateau and all three surpassed the magic number this season.
 
Meyer led Transy in the half with nine points while Rose's Weatherford tallied 13 points to top all scorers. Rose-Hulman shot 52 percent from the field in the opening half while the Pioneers came in at 36 percent. Both teams were five of 10 from long range.
 
Transy is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Mt. St. Joseph at the Beck Center at 7:30 p.m.
