23-0 run send Tommies to 14-0 start

Junior forward Zach Riedeman had 22 points and six rebounds and the No. 2-ranked Tommies used a 23-0 first-half run to take control in Saturday's 94-63 MIAC men's basketball win over St. John's at Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies (14-0 overall, 9-0 MIAC) improved to 5-0 in an 11-day stretch of January games and maintained their two-game lead over second-place Concordia-Moorhead atop the conference standings.

St. Thomas shot 56 percent from the floor, had only 10 turnovers and had a 33-18 rebounding advantage.

St. John's (3-10, 2-7) shot 57 percent from the field but had 22 turnovers, 16 in the first half.

St. Thomas fell behind 5-0 and 12-10 but unleashed a 23-0 run over a 6:20 stretch to build a 33-12 lead with 7:47 to play in the first half. UST led 50-22 at halftime and extended the lead after the break.

Tommy Hannon had 12 points and eight rebounds, John Nance scored 11 points and Marcus Aluipate scored 10 points.

Kevin McKenzie had 13 points for the Johnnies.

St. Thomas closes the first half of the 20-game conference schedule when it plays Monday night at St. Olaf.
