Tuesday wrap: More wins in the Cards

Mike Callaghan scored a game and career-high 24 points to pace Wesleyan to its second upset of a nationally ranked team in four days.

Wesleyan edged No. 4 Amherst 68-67 to split the season series with the Lord Jeffs and pick up another win over a ranked opponent, while Whitman knocked off No. 9 Whitworth, winning on the Pirates' home floor for the first time since 1986.

Amherst's Aaron Toomey was fouled while driving to the rim with seven seconds remaining and the Lord Jeffs down one. He made both shots to give Amherst the lead. On the ensuing Wesleyan possession, Sasha Brown drove and was fouled with 2.2 seconds left. He made both shots to give Wesleyan the victory.

The game does not count in the NESCAC standings. Williams, Wesleyan and Amherst play each other twice each season, once in NESCAC play and once as part of their Little Three rivalry. Amherst beat Wesleyan 66-64 in the NESCAC game on Jan. 6. Wesleyan defeated Amherst and Williams in the same season for the first time since 2000-01. The Cardinals beat No. 15 Williams on Friday night and nearly knocked off No. 1 Middlebury on Saturday.

Whitman rallied from a nine-point deficit early in the second half to knock a 25-year-old monkey off its back. Missionaries senior David Michaels, who missed last weekend's games due to injury, made a triumphant return with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, including nine consecutive points in the second half to dominate a Whitman 9-0 run.

Top-ranked Middlebury shut down Castleton State, which is using Grinnell's high scoring System offense this season. The Panthers held the Spartans to 71 points, their lowest output of the season.

In a key CCIW game, North Central (Ill.) rolled over No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan 82-69. The Cardinals shot a scorching 56 percent from the floor (20-for-36) and from three (5-for-9). They also converted 37 of 43 free throw attempts, led by Derek Raridon's 8-for-9. North Central improves to 4-1 in conference and 8-0 at home. The loss snaps Illinois Wesleyan's nine-game win streak.

No. 19 Augustana downed North Park 73-52 to snap its three game losing streak. Augustana outrebouned North Park 41-22. No. 22 Wheaton (Ill.) held off Carthage 79-73 at home behind 27 points from Tim McCrary.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) stayed unbeaten in the Skyline with a 110-95 win over Mount St. Vincent, despite 39 points by the Dolphins' Cody Gauvard. You can read more about the Golden Eagles' great start in the return of our Around the Region columns.

Newly ranked Eastern Connecticut defeated cross-state rival Western Connecticut 74-61 to improve to 13-1, 6-0 in the Little East Conference. John Sewall's buzzer-beating three made Southern Maine a winner against Mass.-Boston 72-71.

WPI defeated crosstown rival Clark 64-51 as Marco Coppola scored 29 points for the Engineers.

Women's action

Amherst's only loss last year came to Kean on a snowy January night in New Jersey. A year later, the top ranked Lord Jeffs made sure history didn't repeat itself. Amherst stopped No. 18 Kean 81-58 and remained unbeaten. Amherst's Caroline Stedman erruped for 31 points, a new career high.

Fitchburg State took care of Worcester State 59-53 to improve to 14-1, 2-1 in the MASCAC. The Falcons lone loss came at home against Bridgewater State, which is 3-0 in conference after beating Westfield State 62-42 on Tuesday night. Fitchburg State travels to Salem State (7-8, 3-0) on Wednesday.

Janel Monah scored a layup with seven seconds left to lift Farmingdale State over Polytechnic 50-49 and keep the Rams perfect in the Skyline Conference. Hartwick defeated defending Liberty League champion Vassar 67-55 for its 11th win of the season. Kate Purcell scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Hawks' victory.
