BOSTON – Senior guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus) drilled a long-range three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to deliver the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 72-71 win over the UMass Boston Beacons in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston.

Snapping a six-game losing streak the Huskies improve to 7-8 on the season and earn their first conference win of the season to move to 1-5.  The loss is the third straight for the Beacons who fall to 5-11 and 1-5 on the Little East.

With the score tied at 69 following a basket from Southern Maine senior forward Jeremy Jackson (Laplace, La./Independence), the Beacons worked the ball on their next possession until the clock read six seconds remaining and used an elbow-jumper from freshman guard Vinny DeLucia (Miami, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) to snag a 71-69 lead.  The Huskies quickly inbounded the ball and brought it up the floor.  Sewall found the Huskies' hot hand, senior guard Chris Pagentine (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) on the wing as time ran down. Quickly swarmed by the Beacon defense, Pagentine passed the ball out of trouble finding Sewall.  Sewall, who was two feet beyond the three-point line at the top of the key, spotted up for the game-winner.

Pagentine finished game with a team-high 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-7 mark from three-point range.  Sophomore guard Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, Maine) added 16 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Alex Kee (Bath, Maine/Morse) tossed in 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Jackson had nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds to help the Huskies to a 51-34 edge on the boards.  Sewall scored all six of his points in the final four minutes of the second half.

Senior guard Isaac Jenkins (Pordenone, Italy/Savio Prep) led all scorers with 22 points on a 9-for-14 mark from the field.  Jenkins was 4-for-6 from three-point range and had six assists.  Delucia tossed in 18 points and matched Jenkins with six assists.  Freshman guards Mike Caceres (Opa-Locka, Fla./Cypress Bay) and Quadry Allen (White Castle, La./White Castle) each chipped in with eight points.

The game was close throughout and featured 10 lead changes, including six in the second half.  The Huskies shot 40.3 percent (29-for-72) from the field, but were an outstanding 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from three-point range.  The Beacons shot 43.8 percent (28-for-64) from the field and were 11-for-22 (50.0 percent) from three-point territory.

Southern Maine hosts LEC rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).  UMass Boston travels to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
