Monah Hits Game-Winner as Rams Hold Off NYU-Poly

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Senior guard Janel Monah (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored the game-winning layup with seven seconds remaining as the Rams held off NYU-Poly 50-49. Farmingdale State improved to a perfect 6-0 in the Skyline Conference and stand at 7-6 overall.

Trailing 13-10 with 12:01 remaining in the first half, freshman guard Christina Merrill (Levittown. N.Y.) connected on a 3-pointer and Monah converted a jump shot to put Farmingdale State ahead 15-13. NYU-Poly (6-8, 2-4) held a 20-19 advantage before the Rams closed out the final 4:52 of the half on an 11-2 run and took a 30-22 lead into the break. Junior guard Nikita Green (Roosevelt, N.Y.) scored 10 points in the first for Farmingdale State and senior forward Margaux Pickell (Howell, N.J.) had eight points and eight boards for the Fighting Blue Jays.

The Rams led 47-38 with 7:20 to play, before nine straight NYU-Poly points tied the game at 47-47. On Farmingdale State's next possession junior forward Siohban Purvis (Amityville, N.Y.) converted 1-of-2 at the free-throw line to give the Rams a 48-47 advantage. The Fighting Blue Jays responded with a jump shot by Shelby Bruns (Elko, Nev.) to regain the lead 49-48 with 1:07 remaining. After an NYU-Poly timeout, senior forward Natasha Smalls forced a turnover on the inbound pass. Monah hit the game winning layup with seven seconds remaining on the clock for Farmingdale State as she was setup by Green's pass, leading the Rams to a 50-49 victory.

Green led Farmingdale State with 12 points, eight assists and six steals, while senior forward Dominique Cunningham (Amityville, N.Y.) had nine points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Christina Merrill (Levittown, N.Y.) hit three 3-pointers for nine points.

The Fighting Blue Jays had two players record double-doubles as Bruns scored 16 and had 10 rebounds and Pickell had 14 points and 12 boards.

Farmingdale State next will host Purchase in a Skyline Conference game on Saturday, January 21st at 1:00 p.m.
