Rachael Mack and Colby beat Bowdoin in their first of at least two games. |
No. 15 Colby defeated No. 10 Bowdoin 56-41 in the first of two meetings between the CBB rivals. Meanwhile Methodist upset Christopher Newport and DePauw made a splash in its NCAC debut.
The White Mules led from tip to finish as Jil Vaughn scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Vaughn and Rachael Mack keyed a 5-0 run to put Colby up 13 points and the Polar Bears never threatened again. The game doesn't count in the NESCAC standings but the two will meet again at Bowdoin in January.
Methodist snapped Christopher Newport's 41-game winning streak with a 64-60 win at the Freeman Center. The Monarchs used a full court press to shut the Captains down in the second half and grab the lead. Jackie Lyles led Methodist with 21 points and eight rebounds.
No. 11 DePauw announced its presence in the NCAC by beating Denison 58-45. The Tigers scored the last 13 points of the first half to build a 31-17 lead they would not relinquish. The Big Red won the conference last season when DePauw was in the SCAC. The two will meet again on Denison's floor on January 18.
Scranton head coach Mike Strong is one victory away from becoming the all-time leader among Division III women's basketball coaches. His Lady Royals rolled past Moravian 69-55 to give him 757 wins, the same as former St. John Fisher head coach Phil Kahler. Strong will go for the record on Monday night at home against Messiah.
The Ohio Athletic Conference race is shaping up to be a great one. Otterbein upset No. 9 Mount Union 63-52 to improve to 6-0. Wilmington is also undefeated after beating Heidelberg 67-54. The Quakers are tied for first in the conference with Marietta which beat Baldwin-Wallace 70-64 to snap a 33-game losing streak against the Yellow Jackets.
