NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Methodist University (4-3, 1-1) held off the 19th ranked Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday, 64-60, snapping a 41-game home winning streak dating back to the 2009 season. CNU falls to 5-1 with its first setback of the year, and 1-1 in league play.

The Captains used an early 13-2 run to open up a lead in the first half, led by junior guard Kelly Halverson, scoring 10 points in the first half. CNU led by as many as 11 in the game, opening up a 20-9 advantage on a layup from freshman Camry Green with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.

Both teams suffered through some sloppy play and poor shooting in the first half, with Christopher Newport coming out on top with a 32-26 lead at the break. CNU held the Monarchs to just 24.1% shooting on 7-of-29 attempts in the first half, while the Captains connected on 35.3% shooting (12-for-24). Turnovers plagued both teams with 17 combined in the first half.

After halftime, the Captains looked to be in control early, holding a 38-28 lead with under 16 minutes remaining. The turnover struggles took hold for the Captains though, as Methodist mounted a 14-2 run over the next nine minutes of play. CNU was held empty from the field for over five minutes of game time as the Monarchs were powered by their full court press in the second half.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the latter portion of the second half until T.T. Taylor knocked down a big three-pointer of an assist by Jackie Lyles. The trey gave Methodist an eight-point lead, their largest of the game, with 2:17 remaining.

The CNU seniors tried to take control and pressed back, with quick jumpers from Kimmy Hopkins and a long three-pointer from Jerlisa Bowser to cut it back to one possession, 58-55 with 1:10 remaining, but Methodist would knock down enough free-throws down the stretch to hold off the Captains.

The loss is the first of the season for the nationally ranked CNU squad, and the first in the Freeman Center since the regular season finale against Greensboro in the 2008-09 season, a streak of 41 straight wins.

Jackie Lyles led the way for Methodist, with 21 points and eight rebounds, while also grabbing four steals and a block. Christina Schrader added 13 points while Iesha Hayes had nine points and three steals.

The Captains were led by Bowser's 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, adding six rebounds. Halverson finished with 12 points and three board, while sophomore guard Tia Perry grabbed a game-high 12 boards to go with seven points and four assists. Sophomore forward Nicole Mitchell swatted six shots to set a new career high.

The Captains are off for two weeks with final exams scheduled for next week. They will be in action next on December 17th as they travel to Mary Washington for a 2:00 pm tip.
