Averett is experiencing the ups and downs that come with a young, talented team. The Cougars went 5-0 against the ODAC then lost their first two in conference. Senior guard James Contreras, Jr. provides a steady hand through the ride. Brian Lester has more in Around the South.
Averett continued its impressive start by knocking off another ODAC foe and Augustana opened conference play with a win over North Central. Elsewhere Transylvania trounced No. 5 Hanover and the St. Thomas women held off Bethel.
The USA South Athletic Conference is one of the largest in Division III and soon we can strike “one of.” Eighteen months from now it will have 14 men's basketball teams and 19 women's teams. We spoke with Conference Commissioner Rita Wiggs about how the conference evaluates new members and how it balances the interests of existing members.
