THE BASICS:

- The Lead: MIT opened the game with a 19-2 run and maintained a comfortable cushion en route to a 74-57 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night. MIT senior Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) led all players with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a 2-of-3 performance from behind the arc. Spencer Vinson came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points and grab five rebounds for WPI.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- After MIT outscored WPI, 19-2, during the first seven minutes of the game, Vinson knocked down a jumper which sparked a 10-3 run that ended the quarter.

- MIT's lead grew to 14 (28-14) after a layup by sophomore Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) at the six-minute mark of the second stanza. During the next two minutes, WPI recorded back-to-back layups from Bailey Savage and a jumper by Vinson to come within eight. A three-pointer by senior Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) on MIT's next possession reestablished the double-digit lead as the hosts entered halftime with a 37-23 advantage.

- Although the scoring in the third quarter was relatively balanced, MIT's lead grew to 61-41 courtesy of junior Cindy Si's (San Antonio, Texas) layup that was setup by Holinski's steal with 46 seconds on the clock.

- Beginning with two Savage free throws with three ticks left, WPI gradually chipped away at the deficit and came within 66-55 on Victoria Mirecki's layup with 4:03 remaining in regulation. MIT replied with a Holinski trey, setting off a game-ending 8-2 spurt.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Holinski finished with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals while first-year Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) posted 12 points and three assists. Senior Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) paced MIT with eight rebounds and four assists.

- Savage totaled 13 points and eight rebounds while Mirecki notched 11 points, five boards, and three assists. Alyssa Paul rounded out WPI's double-digit scoring with 10 points.

- WPI ended the night with advantages in rebounds (31-29) and bench scoring (25-19) while MIT had the upper hand in points in the paint (28-24), points off turnovers (22-11), and second-chance points (13-6).

- MIT made 12 three-pointers, just one shy of tying the Institute record.

- Both teams return to action on Saturday, Dec. 8 at home. MIT will host Emmanuel College at 3:00 p.m. while WPI will take on NEWMAC foe Clark University an hour earlier.
