Cortland Women Dominate Early in 57-40 Win at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Cortland raced out to first-quarter leads to 11-0 and 21-3 and the Red Dragons defeated host Oswego, 57-40, in a SUNYAC women's basketball game. Cortland remains in second place in the SUNYAC standings with an 8-2 record and is 10-6 overall. Oswego dropped to 5-12 overall and 2-8 in the league.

Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) led Cortland with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored 10 points - all in the first half - and added three steals, and Shana Crespo (Monroe-Woodbury) nearly reached a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Taylor Miller (Freeport) grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and led the Red Dragons with four assists. Tanna Mohammed (Huntington/Elwood-John H. Glenn) also chipped in with nine points, including two 3-pointers.

Rachael Windhausen paced Oswego with 10 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Quincey Zimmerman finished with eight points and three assists and Dana Zillard grabbed nine rebounds.

Both teams did a good job defensively limiting their opponent's shooting. Oswego finished at 26 percent from the field overall and 16 percent (3-of-19) from 3-point range. The Lakers made only 1-of-10 shots in the first quarter. Cortland shot 40 percent in the first half, but only 23 percent in the second half and finished at 32 percent overall. The Red Dragons were 25 percent (7-of-28) from the 3-point arc. Cortland took advantage of 24 Oswego giveaways and held a 21-10 advantage in points off of turnovers.

The Red Dragons led 11-0 four minutes into the game on five points from McHugh, four from S. Crespo and two from J. Crespo. Cortland led 21-3 after one quarter and by as much as 24 pointsin the second quarter before going into halftime with a 37-16 lead.

Oswego got back to within 16 points with three minutes left in the third, but Cortland went up by 25 points at 50-25 with nine minutes remaining in the fourth. The Lakers made a final push and got as close as 13 points at 51-38 on a Sarah Feminella layup with 4:23 left, but Miller and Vitucci hit buckets over the next two minutes to secure the victory.

Cortland will host Wells College in a non-league game Tuesday at 6 p.m.
