GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Lauren Ramsey scored a game-high 22 points as Guilford College defeated visiting Oglethorpe University, 77-75 in overtime, on Thursday evening. The Quakers improved to 5-1 while the Stormy Petrels dropped to 5-3.
In a hotly contested battle, there were 18 ties and the lead changed hands 30 times. The Quakers held a 35-34 lead at halftime.
Ramsey was 9-19 shooting and had six rebounds. Four other Guilford students recorded double-digit scoring totals. Miracle Walters netted 14 and Alli Jackson came off the bench to produce a career-high 11 points. Julie Carini and Jasmine McBride both contributed 10 points.
Jackson made a three-pointer with two seconds left to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Bailey Charles made a jumper with 1:27 in the clock to give Oglethorpe a 75-74 edge. The Quakers responded with a layup by Ramsey and a free throw by McBride with 18 seconds left. The visitors had a chance to tie, but could not get off a shot and the Quakers forced a turnover just before time expired.
Lauren Ramson had 20 points for the Stormy Petrels. Savannah LeGate added 18 markers and a game-best 11 rebounds for Oglethorpe.
For the game, Oglethorpe shot 45-percent (30-67) and Guilford was 27-62 (44-percent). The Stormy Petrels had a slight edge in rebounding, 38-37. Guilford committed 27 turnovers and forced 24 Oglethorpe miscues.
Guilford plays at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
