The Oglethorpe women's basketball team led Guilford late Thursday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina, but the homestanding Quakers hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, then took the lead with 1:10 remaining in the extra period for a 77-75 victory over the Stormy Petrels. The defeat dropped the Petrels to 5-2 on the young season.

The teams traded the lead in the overtime period, with Oglethorpe grabbing the advantage first on a layup from freshman center Savannah LeGate and Guilford responding with back-to-back baskets to take a lead of their own, 73-71, with 2:44 remaining. Freshman forward Audrey Burdge scored to tie the game back up with 2:44 left, and after a Quaker free throw, junior guard Bailey Charles followed up by sinking a jumper with 1:27 on the clock to give the visitors a 75-74 lead. However, Guilford followed with a basket of their own 17 seconds later to take the lead back. They made 1 of 2 free throws with 18 seconds remaining, extending their lead to 77-75 and giving the Petrels a chance to tie or take the lead at the other end. However, Oglethorpe was unable to get their final shot to fall, resulting in victory for the home team.

With the game tied at 64-all with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Charles was fouled and hit a free throw to give Oglethorpe the lead. Then, after a missed shot at the other end, she was fouled again with 13 seconds on the clock and sank both free throws to extend the Petrels' lead to 67-64. However, a Guilford 3-pointer with two seconds on the clock tied the game, sending the proceedings to overtime. 

Down 59-58 with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, Oglethorpe tied the game with a free throw from Charles, then took the lead on a LeGate layup with 3:37 left, 61-59. A pair of Guilford free throws tied the score again, but a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Sydney Long gave the Petrels a 64-61 edge with 56 seconds remaining. The Quakers went on to tie the score, 64-64, with 15 seconds remaining.

Guilford held their largest lead of the contest, 47-40, with 4:47 remaining in the third quarter. Oglethorpe responded with a 7-0 run over the next 1:10 to tie the score, 47-47. The home team took a 3-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Oglethorpe was able to come back for the late lead, outscoring the Quakers 19-16 in the fourth quarter.

The Petrels outscored Guilford 15-13 in the first quarter, building a 6-point edge, their largest of the game, with 2:31 left in the opening quarter. However, the Quakers responded with a 22-19 advantage in the second quarter, leading 35-34 at the break.

Oglethorpe outshot Guilford 45-to-44 percent overall, but the Quakers converted on 42 percent of their 3-point attempts to Oglethorpe's 35 percent. The Petrels outrebounded Guilford 38-37, and forced 27 Quaker turnovers while committing 24 of their own. 

Junior forward Lauren Ransom had her best game of the season for Oglethorpe, scoring 20 points on 10-of-15 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds. Meanwhile, freshman center Savannah LeGate recorded another double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 11 rebounds while going 8-for-15 from the field. Long also recorded five assists and six steals, while junior guard Brooke Simpson passed out five assists.

"We came out a bit flat and sluggish, and allowed Guilford to gain confidence as the game wore on," said Oglethorpe head coach Alex Richey. "It's just hard to win a game on the road when you do that. We were sloppy on the offensive end with 24 turnovers, and we were disconnected defensively. It's unfortunate to lose in the way we did. We need to get back to work and refocus on the rest of the season. We've got a little time off for finals and we've got a couple more games left in our non-conference season. Our goal will just be to keep moving forward and fix some of these issues that have cropped up on the defensive end."

The Petrels will next be in action Dec. 18 and 19, when they'll host the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic. They'll take on Centenary (Louisiana) at 6 p.m. on Dec. 18, then return to Dorough Field House at 4 p.m. on Dec. 19 to battle Emory and Henry.
