SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 7, 2016) – Despite a career-high 30 points from freshman point guard Bella Taylor, the Sewanee women's basketball team could not stop Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern, Sunday, as the Panthers earned a 79-62 win inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 11-10 overall and 3-7 in league play. BSC, who now leads the league, is 18-2 overall and 8-2 in SAA action.

Both teams came out of the gate hot. Behind nine first-quarter points from Taylor, the Tigers shot 40 percent the opening 10 minutes. Unfortunately, BSC also had early success. The Panthers made 61.5 percent of its attempts to lead the Tigers, 21-12 at the end of the first.

BSC continued to roll in the second quarter. The Panthers build a 16-point lead when guard Halle Knowles hit a three with 4:16 left in the first half. Eventually, BSC led by 12, 37-25, at the break.

A big reason for BSC's early success was the play of Yorisha Bryant. The senior forward had 12 points and five rebounds by halftime.

In the second half, it was much of the same for BSC. The Panthers made no worst than 41.7 percent of their attempts in either quarter. With that, BSC built its largest lead, 20 points, with 4:21 left in the third quarter.

Despite being down late, Sewanee kept fighting. Reserves Kelsey ArbuckleKatie RothAli Chastenet, and Haley Lyerly pulled the Tigers to as close as 12 points the final quarter, however BSC was able to maintain its advantage.

Overall, Sewanee made 42.6 percent of its attempts. However, the Tiger defense struggled. Sewanee allowed BSC to make 53.5 percent of its shots.

Along with Taylor, Sue Kim had 10 points while Arbuckle finished with six and four rebounds.

Bryant led BSC with 20 points and seven rebounds. Three other BSC starters were in double figures, led by Knowles's 14 points.

Sewanee returns to action with a 6:00 p.m. road game at Hendrix, Friday.
