Medford, Mass.-Junior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) and sophomore guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) each scored 10 points as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team fell, 66-40, in non-conference action at Tufts on Tuesday night.
The Jumbos (19-1) scored the first seven points of the game and led, 14-3, early. Five Jumbos scored points in the opening seven minutes, including five by sophomore forward Michela North (Duxbury, MA). Hill's layup for RIC (6-14) cut the deficit to nine, 14-5, but senior guard Hannah Foley's (Acton, MA) 1,000th point on a three gave Tufts a double-figure lead for the rest of the night. The margin touched 16 points four times in the first half, including 28-12 on another three by Foley at 6:29.
The Anchorwomen scored the next six points, which included four by freshman guard Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, MA), to pull within 10 at 28-18 with 4:19 to go until halftime. However, Tufts closed the half with a 7-2 run to build a 35-20 advantage at the break.
Rhode Island College would get no closer than 15 points (39-24) after a layup by junior guard Michelle Lagrotteria (Niantic, CT) at 17:38 of the second half. The Jumbos would push their lead to as many as 30 points, 62-32, on a jumper by junior guard Nicole Brooks (Greenburgh, NY) at 4:05.
RIC shot 30.2 percent (13-for-43) from the field, 30.0 percent (3-for-10) from the three-point land and 57.9 (11-for-19) from the charity stripe.
North led the Jumbos with 17 points and five rebounds, while Foley scored 11 points and grabbed eight boards. Tufts shot 41.9 percent (26-for-62) from the field, 25.0 percent (5-for-20) from long range and a perfect 100.0 percent (9-for-9) from the charity stripe.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Keene State on Saturday, Feb. 7 (1 p.m.).
