BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team fell to Brooklyn College, 76-53, on Wednesday evening in the APEX Main Gym. The loss snaps Lehman's three-game winning streak.
The Lightning (13-6, 7-4 CUNYAC) led by as many as five in the first half, thanks to successfully shooting 13 free throws in the first 20 minutes. Eight of those 13 free throws were made by junior forward Karrin Walker (New York, N.Y./Richard R. Green), who shot 100% from the line in the opening half.
The Bulldogs (13-5, 10-1 CUNYAC) were able to turn momentum into their favor by going on a 19-2 run, in a span of 6:12, to jump out to a 31-19 lead, with 1:50 remaining in the opening stanza. Both teams went into the locker rooms with Brooklyn leading, 34-23.
The Bulldogs began the second half the way they ended the first, and extended their lead to 23, with 13:45 remaining in regulation. The Lightning would not go down without a fight, as the home team scored the next ten points to cut Brooklyn's lead 53-40, with 10:34 left to go. Highlighted in that run were three-point field goals from junior guard Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) and Walker.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Lightning would get as the Bulldogs were able to pull away again, and hand Lehman just its first loss in four games.
Walker tallied a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 9-12 overall from the free throw line. She was also aggressive on defense by forcing three steals and blocking two shots. Classmate Yarmese Jones (Astoria, N.Y./William C. Bryant) scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and went 8-9 from the line. Navarro added 11 points of her own.
Lehman will hit the road, for a CUNYAC matchup with CCNY, on Friday. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
