The Bronx, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team extended its win streak to five straight with a convincing 76-53 victory over the Lightning of Lehman College on Wednesday evening at The APEX in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 13-5 overall on the season and 10-1 in the CUNYAC; while the Lightning drop to 13-6 overall on the year and 7-4 in conference play.
The win also gives Brooklyn the regular season sweep over Lehman, as the Bulldogs defeated the Lightning, 67-44, earlier this season back on December 12th at the West Quad Center.
Senior Vanessa D'Ambrosi led the way for BC with 22 points, nine rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocks. Classmate Nicole Francomano added 12 points, seven assists, four rebound and three steals, while senior Asia Foster and freshmen Chrissy Heyer and Karen Mak all finished the night with nine points each.
For Lehman, Karrin Walker recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs, to go with three steals and two blocks. Yarmese Jones chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Jennifer Navarro chipped in with 11 points.
Turnovers played a key role in the Brooklyn win, as the Bulldogs scored 37 points off of 33 Lehman turnovers. BC also pulled down 15 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points for the visitors.
"Our defense really stepped up and helped our offense get going," said head coach Alex Lang. "Vanessa really hit some big shots in the second half to help us pull away."
BC opened the game on a 5-0 run on a jumper from senior Megan Campbell followed by a three-pointer from Heyer. The Lightning would answer with a run of their own, scoring seven straight to take a 7-5 lead at the 15:42 mark. The Bulldogs would regain the lead and eventually go up 11-9, with 11:32 on the clock, before Lehman used an 8-1 spurt to take a 17-12 advantage, their largest of the game, with 9:36 remaining before the halftime buzzer.
Brooklyn would quickly erase its five point deficit using a 9-0 run to retake the lead at 21-17 with 6:29 on the clock. Following a layup from Walker to end the Lightning's scoring drought, the Bulldogs would score 10 straight to take a double-digit lead, 31-19, before going in to the locker room leading 34-23.
The second half would see Brooklyn lead by double figures throughout, eventually building its lead to as many as 24, en route to its 76-53 win.
For the game, the Bulldogs shot 45.5% (30-for-66) from the field, including 47.1% (8-for-17) from beyond the arc. Brooklyn also shot 72.7% (8-for-11) from the line.
Lehman shot 36.8% (14-for-38) from the field, including 33.3% (3-for-9) from three. The Lightning shot 78.8% (22-for-28) from the charity stripe.
Brooklyn returns to action this Friday, January 30th, as the Bulldogs will host the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in another key CUNYAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm at the West Quad Center. BC will look to sweep the regular season series, as Brooklyn defeated CSI earlier this month on January 3rd, 66-59, at Staten Island.
