Randolph-Macon Defeats Cold-Shooting Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Randolph-Macon took full advantage of a frigid first-half shooting performance by Bridgewater College to lead by 25 points at the half and the Yellow Jackets went on to defeat the Eagles 72-54 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball action Tuesday evening.

Bridgewater (8-7, 3-4 in the ODAC) struggled to find the range in the first half, making just 7-of-35 shots from the floor for 20 percent accuracy.

Randolph-Macon (13-2, 6-1 in the ODAC) took the same number of shots in the first half as the Eagles, but the Yellow Jackets knocked down 17 shots for a 48.6 percent mark.

Bridgewater got on the board first when Jessalyn Monday worked the lane and scored off an assist from Cassidy Burkholder for a 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead for good on its next trip to the offensive end when Lauren Vugteveen converted a 3-point play for a 3-2 lead.

Randolph-Macon reeled off 10 more points to lead by 11. Another bucket by Vugteveen and a 3-pointer by Khajae Hester made the score 8-2. Hester scored again on a driving layup and Hannah Livermon drained a long 3-pointer for a 13-2 lead with 14:59 left in the first half.

A short jumper by Tyler Pinder snapped the Eagles scoring drought, but Macon answered with two buckets by Amber Lee to push its lead to 17-4.

Burkholder converted a three-point play to pull the Eagles to within 10, but a 13-3 Yellow Jackets run padded the lead to 20 points. Livermon connected from beyond the arc and Sarah Parsons added a layup, making the score 22-7. Monday hit 1-of-2 foul shots for the Eagles and Kaitlyn Lehan scored from inside to cut the deficit to 22-10. The Yellow Jackets then scored eight straight to double the lead. A 15-footer by Livermon and a layup by Katie Anderson made the score 26-10. Vugteveen then scored two buckets for a 30-10 lead with 7:26 left in the half.

The Yellow Jacket s continued to pull away, outscoring the Eagles 11-6 over the final seven minutes for a 41-16 lead at the half.

Bridgewater shot the ball much better in the second half, making nearly 40 percent of its attempts, but the Eagles could get no closer than the final margin of 18 points.

Burkholder was the lone Bridgewater player in double figures as she finished the contest with 15 points. Freshman center Lehan had a productive outing in 10 minutes of action. Lehan just missed her first career double-double as she finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

Randolph-Macon placed three players in double figures with Livermon leading the way with 18 points. Vugteveen scored 16 and Hester added 13.

Bridgewater did hold a narrow 54-50 advantage on the boards. A pair of freshmen, Lehan and Monday, led the Eagles with eight rebounds each. Caroline Young paced the Yellow Jackets with nine rebounds.
