Shooting Woes Plague Brooklyn in Loss at Baruch

New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball dropped its first City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contest of the season on Saturday afternoon at the ARC Arena, as the Bulldogs fell to the Bearcats of Baruch College in a matchup of undefeated CUNYAC teams.

With the loss, Brooklyn falls to 8-5 overall on the season and 6-1 in the CUNYAC; while Baruch remains perfect in conference play at 6-0 and 9-4 overall on the year.

The first half featured see-saw action, as the teams combined for eight lead changes and three ties.

Following a free throw from the Bulldogs' Karen Mak that tied the game at 16 all with 7:44 remaining in the first half; Baruch would outscore Brooklyn by 14 to close out the half, 22-8, en route to a 38-24 halftime advantage.

The Bulldogs shot just 20.6% (7-for-34) from the field in the opening half, including 25.0% (2-for-8) from three; while Baruch shot 40.7% (11-for-27) from the field and 42.9% (3-for-7) from beyond the arc to aide in the Bearcats' intermission lead.

The second half saw the home team jump out to a 12-0 run to balloon its lead to 26, 50-24, with 17:21 left in the game. The Bearcats' insurmountable lead would be too much for the Bulldogs to overcome, as Baruch would cruise to its 84-60 victory to take sole possession of first place in the CUNYAC.

"We were outplayed today," said head coach Alex Lang. "We will need to regroup and get some good practices on Monday and Tuesday to get ready for Hunter on Wednesday."

Nicole Francomano scored a team-high 12 points for Brooklyn, while Vanessa D'Ambrosi also scored in double figures with 11 points. Asia Foster nearly registered a double-double, finishing the afternoon with eight points and team-high nine rebounds, while Megan Campbell also added eight points. Chrissy Heyer chipped in with six points coming off the bench.

Baruch had four starters score in double figures, led by the duo of Francess Henry and Iyana Abrams, who scored 15 points each. Henry also added eight rebounds and five block shots, while Abrams dished out six assists to go with three steals. Alicea Ulmer finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Sheridan Taylor recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, to go with three blocks. Kristen Podlovits scored nine points coming off the bench, while Veronica Ganzi and Vanessa Santana each scored eight points.

For the game, the Bulldogs shot 29.9% (20-for-67) from the field, including 37.5% (6-for-16) from three. Brooklyn also struggled from the free throw line, converting just 46.7% (14-for-30) from the charity stripe.

Baruch shot 42.2% (27-for-64) from the field and 43.8% (7-for-16) from beyond the arc. The Bearcats also shot 69.7% (23-for-33) from the line.

Brooklyn will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday, January 14th, when the Bulldogs will host the Hawks of Hunter College in CUNYAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm at the West Quad Center.
