BOSTON, Mass.—Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) and Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) each recorded double-doubles, to help UMass Boston women's basketball (5-4, 1-1 Little East) snap a 15-game losing streak at the hands of Rhode Island College (2-8, 1-1 Little East).
The Beacons used a 14-9 run over the final nine minutes, to earn a 63-58 win over the defending Little East Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions.
Murphy poured in 21 points and added 12 rebounds and four assists, while Morrison grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with her 10 points. The two helped UMass Boston earn a 46-34 rebounding advantage, as the Beacons earned their first win over the Anchorwomen since January 13, 2007.
Freshman Grace Geary (Falmouth, Mass.) atoned for a slow game in her Little East debut a week ago, as she finished with 16 points, including a game-high four 3-pointers. Geary also added five assists and three steals to lead the Beacons.
Rhode Island College sophomore Alex Moore finished with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including a 4-for-8 mark from distance. Reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week Jess Korzec added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Jessa Rubera chipped in with all 11 of the visitors' bench points.
UMass Boston shot 40.7 percent (22-for-54) from the field, while holding the Anchorwomen to a 30.5 percent (18-for-59) mark. The Anchorwomen did have better luck from behind the 3-point arc, as they outshot UMass Boston 40 percent (10-for-25) to 26.3 percent (5-for-19).
The Beacons were able to take control of the game late, thanks to their big advantage down low. UMass Boston grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and held a 26-12 advantage in points in the paint.
Rhode Island College opened the game with a 5-4 lead, before UMass Boston bounced back with a 9-2 run. Geary knocked down a triple to start the run and Mallory Nelson (Topsham, Maine), Murphy and Katrina Edwards (Springfield, Mass.) followed with jump shots to make it 13-7.
Rhode Island College answered right back, as Rubera knocked down back-to-back threes, to tie the game at 13-13 with 8:54 to play.
The two teams would go back back-and-forth over the final nine minutes, with Rhode Island College taking a 26-25 lead into the break on the back of a Michelle Lagrotteria 3-pointer at the buzzer.
UMass Boston opened the second half on a 5-0 run to take a 30-26 leadon another 3-pointer from Geary and a Murphy layup.
Rhode Island College would retake the lead and hold it until the midway point of the second half. Murphy (six points) and Morrison combined for an 8-0 run over a 2:56 span to give the Beacons the lead for good at 53-49 with 7:16 to play.
After Korzec cut the Beacons' lead to 57-54 with 2:21 to play, the Beacons hit six of eight free throws down the stretch to earn their first LEC win of the season.
UMass Boston will be off for three weeks, before hosting Salve Regina University January 3 at 1 p.m.
