Guilford Pulls Away From Bridgewater

GREENSBORO,N.C. - Guilford College broke open a close game with a 20-2 outburst to start the second half as the Quakers defeated Bridgewater College,72-43, Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball action.

The Eagles traded the blows with the Quakers throughout the first half.

After the Quakers opened the scoring with two free throws, the Eagles reeled off the next seven points. Holly Morgan put the Eagles ahead with a 3-pointer and Heather Cantrell converted a steal into two points with a short jumper, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead. Cantrell added a layup to give Bridgewater a 7-2 lead at the 16:28 mark.

Bridgewater's Cassidy Burkholder and Guilford's Gabby Oglesby scored four points each before a 3-pointer by the Quakers' Brittany Drew trimmed the Eagles lead to 11-9.

A jumper by Jess Strom made it 13-9, but Oglesby hit two foul shots and Anais Weatherly scored on a layup to pull the Quakers even at 13-13.

After a Bridgewater turnover, Weatherly scored again to give the Quakers the lead for good.

Burkholder hit 1-of-2 free throws to pull the Eagles to within one, but Kayla Adams knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to propel the Quakers to a 21-14 advantage.

Jessica Lam scored for the Eagles, but Guilford continued to inch away as a free throw by Sarah Burnock and a layup by Weatherly pushed the margin to eight 24-16.

After a 3-pointer by Bridgewater's Holly Morgan cut the deficit to five Guilford score six straight to push its lead to double figures. Morgan King hit two hoops and Oglesby add a jumper, making the score 30-19.

Bridgewater responded with a 6-0 spurt to full within five as Oshene Kelly, Rebecca Reifsnider and Morgan each netted a bucket, making the score 30-25. Adams connected on a jumper just before the buzzer to send the Quakers to the break with a 32-25 lead.

King and Oglesby combined to score the first nine points of the second half as Guilford's lead ballooned to  41-25. After a jumper by Burkholder, the Quakers reeled off 11 more unanswered points to take a 52-27 lead with 14:04 left in the game.

Burkholder was the only Bridgewater player in double figures as she finished with 13 points. Oglesby led the Quakers with 21 points, followed by Adams with 15 and King with 11.

The Quakers (15-4, 7-3 in the ODAC) owned the boards by a 45-28 margin with Oglesby and King pulling down nine rebounds each. Burkholder and Morgan each had five rebounds for the Eagles.
