Newport News, Va. – Marymount University women's basketball senior guard Katelyn Fischer broke the program record for career assists in a 78-65 loss at 19th-ranked Capital Athletic Conference newcomer Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon. Fischer tallied six assists in the contest to give her 497 for her career, breaking Cathy Finney's record of 491 that had stood since 1995.
The Saints fall to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Four MU players scored in double-figures led by Fischer's 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting including 3-for-4 from three-point range. Felicia Adomako added 12 points off the bench while Kievanna Lacey and Daja Belt added 11 and 10, respectively.
Marymount took the early advantage with a 10-4 lead capped by an on old-fashioned three-point play by Belt. The Captains (13-2, 6-1 CAC) responded with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game, eventually leading 18-12, before the Saints answered with a 12-4 run of their own to retake the lead with 7:40 remaining in the half. Trading leads once more, CNU outscored Marymount 21-7 down the stretch to take a 43-31 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Christopher Newport extended its lead to 16 up 47-31 but MU kept battling and pulled within one courtesy of an 18-3 outburst over the next 7:30. The Captains collected themselves from that point, pushing back to a double-figure lead with six minutes left to play. Marymount fought back and pulled within two possessions down 66-60 with 3:50 remaining but couldn't cut the deficit any less as CNU closed on the game on the free throw line.
Tia Perry led Christopher Newport with a game-high 20 points.
