NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing in just her fifth game of the season due to an injury, junior Camry Green scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double, helping lead the 19th-ranked Captains to a eighth straight win. Christopher Newport (13-2, 6-1) dropped Marymount (9-6, 5-2) by 13 points in a 78-65 final that saw four Captains finish in double figures.

Green's first double-double of the season is the 21st of her career, and came on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. She came off the bench and played a season-high 22 minutes for CNU.

The Captains used a strong shooting performance and stifling defensive pressure to get past the defending CAC Champion Saints. CNU scored 29 points off of turnovers and forced a season-high 28 giveaways in the game. It was the fourth straight game that the Captains had forced at least 28 turnovers in a game.

Marymount burst out to a six-point lead early in the game, pulling ahead 10-4 on a three-point play by Daja Belt. She had five of the first ten points to give the Saints the quick advantage. It wouldn't take long, however, for the Captains to reverse track and pull ahead of the Saints. Green started a 14-2 run for the Captains as CNU took an 18-12 lead with 10:42 remaining in the half.

All-American guard Katelyn Fischer would bounce the Saints back in front with a pair of back-to-back three-pointers, followed by a layup by Aliya Roseborough. CNU answered with back-to-back treys from Kendra Stone and Brandi Holland, and closed out the half on another roll, this time an 11-2 spurt, to takea 43-31 lead at intermission. The 12-point lead was the largest of the first 20 minutes, and was powered by a tremendous full-court press from CNU.

Leading the charge was senior Tia Perry, who had six steals in the first half alone. She went 4-5 from the floor and added a perfect 4-4 performance from the free-throw line for 12 first-half points. For good measure, she added a pair of blocked shots and an assist to pace the strong opening half performance by the Captains. CNU shot 55.2% (16-29) from the floor in the first half, going 3-6 from long range and 8-10 from the charity stripe. Green added eight points and five rebounds in the first half, while senior Andrea Hobbs dished five assists with four points and three rebounds.

Quickly into the second half, Christopher Newport kept the pressure up and forced two quick turnovers in the first 2:03 to take a game-high 16-point edge, 47-31. Marymount would not go away quietly, however, and used a big run of their own to pull back within just one point, 50-49. The 18-3 run was led by Fischer, who scored 10 points along the way. CNU responded once it became a one-possession game, getting another steal and a big three-point play from Stone. Freshman Lauren Cox added a three-pointer off an assist by Nicole Mitchell and the lead was back to seven, 56-49.

After trading baskets for several minutes, a three-pointer from Mitchell with 6:19 remaining would get the lead back to double figures, 64-53. Marymount continued to try and cut the lead down, primarily from the free-throw line, but CNU had the answer down the stretch to pull away for a 78-65 victory, holding off the talented Saints program.

Perry finished the game with eight steals, adding a pair in the second half, and posted her fifth 20-point performance of the season when she finished with an even 20 on 6-of-11 shooting. Green's 17 points and 10 rebounds helped lead CNU, while Mitchell added 14 and Holland had 11 for the Captains. Hobbs finished with seven dimes and two steals, while Stone addede nine points and two steals.

Fischer was 6-for-8 in the game, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc to score a team-high 18 points. Marymount also had four players in double figures, getting 12 from Felicia Adomako, 11 from Keivanna Lacey and 10 by Belt. The Saints were plagued by turnovers, as Fischer had ten and Lacey six in the game. With six assists, Fischer broke the Marymount record for career helpers, taking sole possession of a mark that has stood since 1995.

Both teams shot over 40% form the field, with CNU knocking down 46.3% (25-54) and Marymount going 41.7% (20-48). The score was tied five times and the lead changed hands three times.

Christopher Newport will look to stay hot after winning eight straight games, including six conference battles. The Captains will now head back on the road for a pair, playing at St. Mary's (Md.) (6-8, 3-4) on Wednesday, January 22 and then on to Frostburg State (3-10, 1-6) on Saturday, January 25.
