Elmhurst Women Upend Millikin 76-63

ELMHURST, Ill. - Four players scored in double figures as the Elmhurst women's basketball team secured a 76-63 victory over visiting Millikin University for their first CCIW win of the season.

Elmhurst (9-5, 1-2 CCIW) led wire-to-wire, scoring the game's first five points and never looking back. Millikin was able to pull within a single point at 11-10 with 12:10 left in the half, but Elmhurst rebounded, building a 13-point margin. The visitors pulled within eight late in the half, but Elmhurst scored the final eight points of the half to take a 43-27 lead into the locker room.

The lead quickly reached 21 points in the second half when Mel Schwerdtmann connected on a layup with 13:50 to play. Millikin trailed by as many as 23 but fought back to within 12 points with 5:49 left. The Bluejays were able to keep Millikin from closing any closer.

Karen Senette paced Elmhurst with 18 points. Schwerdtmann added 14 off the bench with Fiona McMahon notching 12 and Devin Vaughan 11. Vaughn added a game-high six assists and four steals while McMahon pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.  Elmhurst finished the game shooting 39.7 percent  (23-of-58) from the floor, including 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays were solid from the foul line, hitting 24-of-30 attempts (800 percent).

Millikin shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the floor. Brittany Czaplicki led the Big Blue in the loss with a game-high 24 points while Alyssa Saklak came off the bench to score 18.

Elmhurst (9-5, 1-2) will face North Park University at home on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:00 p.m.
