DAYTONA BEACH (FL) – The Delaware Valley College women's basketball team opened its holiday trip to Florida with a 72-62 victory over University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at the 2013 Land of Magic Classic.
The win was the fourth straight for the Aggies as they improved to 6-3 on the season. They will take on Trinity College of Connecticut at noon on Sunday for their final game at the tournament, which features a total of 17 contests over a three-day period. Wisconsin-Eau Claire fell to 2-9 on the year.
The Blugolds got off to a quick start with seven of the game's first nine points. They held the advantage for the first 13 minutes and were still up 20-19 before Delaware Valley went on a 9-1 run to take the lead for good at 28-21. The Aggies eventually took a 35-30 lead into halftime and a key reason why was points off turnovers as they forced 13 miscues and netted 14 points (Wisconsin-Eau Claire had seven points off seven Delaware Valley turnovers).
Brittany Wood sank back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second half and give the Aggies their largest of the game at 11, 41-30. The Blugolds, behind seven points from Kristin Sahr, fought back with a 13-4 spurt over the next six minutes, to make it a two-point contest.
Wisconsin-Eau Claire was down by just two on two other occasions, the last coming just past the midway point of the half when the score was 49-47. However, Delaware Valley did not relinquish the lead at any time and used a 9-3 run to take a 58-50 advantage with 4:20 left on the clock. The Blugolds never made it a one-possession game the rest of the way.
Delaware Valley finished the game with 13 steals and 29 points off of 25 Wisconsin-Eau Claire turnovers. It shot 47.5 percent from the field and nearly 79 percent from the foul line. Brenna Coll led the way with 19 points and she also added four steals and three assists. Wood had 17 points, including 12 in the second half. Eireann Anastasi's line included 14 points, four assists and four steals while Shannon Barlow hit double digits as well with 10 points. Agatha Drozd added seven points and four assists in the win.
Teenie Lichtfuss paced Wisconsin-Eau Claire with 19 points, including 7-for-11 shooting from the field. Lichtfuss also had four steals, four rebounds and three assists. Sahr came off the bench to notch 12 points and six rebounds while Courtney Lewis had eight points and game-highs of nine rebounds and five assists.
