St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior guard Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) led four Seahawks in double-digit scoring Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team rolled to a 96-40 non-conference victory over the City College of New York Beavers.
Murray matched her career-high with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including a career-best four made three-point field goals. She also added three rebounds and two assists as the Seahawks kicked off the 2012-13 campaign with the dominating win in the second day of the Cherry Cove Seahawk Classic.
St. Mary's (1-0) coasted to a 49-23 halftime lead by shooting 50.0% from the floor. The Seahawk defense stifled CCNY's offense to just 25.0% shooting with most of the Beavers' first-half points coming on a 15-of-18 effort from the charity stripe.
Senior guard Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and CCNY's first-year forward Bria Fisher (Elmont, N.Y.) paced all scorers with 10 points each in the first half while Fisher and junior forward Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) each hauled in five first-half boards for their respective teams.
The Seahawks collected a 52.5-field goal percentage in the second stanza, outscoring CCNY by 30 points in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Murray was 3-of-5 from downtown to lead the team's 5-of-11 effort from behind the three-point line in the second half for a 45.5-three-point field goal percentage.
Pruden finished the afternoon with a dozen points while junior forward Jasmine Smith (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) contributed career-highs of 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.
