(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) - Sophomore guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) scored a career-high 18 points to help lead the Thomas More College women's basketball team to a 79-42 win over Westminster College tonight (Wednesday, February 8, 2012) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 18-4 overall and remain in first place in the PAC as they improve to 14-1 in the PAC. With the loss, the Titans fall to 7-14 overall and 7-8 in the PAC.
Thomas More jumped out to an early 12-2 lead when sophomore guard Katie Kitchen (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made one-of-two free-throws with 15:12 to play in the first half. Westminster answered with a 6-0 run, capped by a Jenn Cantella three-pointer to cut the lead to 12-8 with 11:28 to play in the opening half. The Saints responded with a 26-4 run to extend the lead to 38-12 with 1:28 to play in the half when junior forward Rebecca Leffel (Troy, Ohio/Miami East) made a jumper. The Titans' Courtney Klein made one-of-two free-throws with 31-seconds to play in the half to cut the Saints' halftime lead to 38-13.
The Saints opened the second half on a 33-17 run to build a 71-30 lead with 5:43 to play in the game when junior guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) made a lay-up. The Titans closed out the game on a 12-8 run, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More earned the 79-42 victory.
Two other Saints joined Beasley in double figures as Kitchen finished with a game-high 21 points and junior guard Jill Brunsman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother Mercy) had 12. Leffel just missed double figures with a career-high nine points. Junior center/forward Katie Kees (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) led the team on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds, while Beasley led the team in assists with five.
The Saints will travel to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania on Saturday (February 11) to play Waynesburg University at 1:30 p.m. inside the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
